Last night, the Washington Capitals defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-0, for the 2nd shutout in that series; the puts the Capitals in the Stanley Cup finals for only the 2nd time in franchise history.

This is a pretty special day in my life. It's our 55th wedding anniversary. Yep. Fifty-five years ago … 1963 … we got married after having dated for 3 years. Best thing I ever did marrying a wife as special and wonderful as the one I did. She was my absolute true love then … and I love her that much more now. I was truly a VERY, VERY lucky man.

We're going to celebrate in several ways. This morning we're going to visit shut-ins from our church. We've always done this together and we've done it now for maybe 18 years. Then, this evening we're going out to dinner to one of our favorite restaurants. Then tomorrow we're going to a movie with lunch at a favorite Italian restaurant. Shold be a fun filled couple of days of celebration.

Another visit to shut-ins from our church this morning. We really look forward to this monthly visit. We rotate between four groups so see everyone about 3 times each year. One of the groups consists of two senior residence homes so we see 3 to 10 each time we visit each residence. It's wonderful and the folks we visit are great, too! I think today we'll see five individuals this morning who still live at home … just are not able to get to church. Our emphasis is on helping them to realize they are still full members of our faith community and while we're bringing them communion … we're also encouraging them to pray for all our parish family.

Just got this in an email and thought it was really interesting. Passing it on with no verification of the info … but, very interesting none-the-less.

The next
time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature
isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some
facts about the 1500s:

Most
people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and
they still smelled pretty good by June.. However, since they were starting to
smell . .. . brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence
the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting
married.

Baths
consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the
privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the
women and finally the children. Last of all the
babies. By then the water
was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, "Don't
throw the baby out with the Bath water!"

Houses
had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the
only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals
(mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and
sometimes the animals would slip an d fall off the roof. Hence the saying
"It's raining cats and dogs."

There
was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real
problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice
clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded
some protection. That's how canopy beds came into
existence.

The
floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the
saying, "Dirt poor." The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in
the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their
footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened
the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in
the entrance-way. Hence: a thresh hold.

(Getting quite an education, aren't you?)

In
those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung
over the fire.. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They
ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme: Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old.

Sometimes
they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, "bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat.

Those with
money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

Bread
was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.

Lead
cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.

England
is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury
people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the bell or was considered a dead ringer...

And
that's the truth...Now, whoever said History was boring ! !
!

Today and tomorrow in Mexico are celebrated as "The Day of the Dead." The Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican heritage elsewhere. The multi-day holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey. Dates, today, correspond to All Saints and All Souls Day.

My uncle died last week. Been dealing with the fallout the past few days. Finally found out that there's not going to be any memorial service or anything like that. Kind of a relief, actually not having to deal with my dysfunctional family. Kicker is, though, long about a week ago, I got a hankering to call him up, see how he was getting along. Instead of doing this, I let myself get distracted by all the other shit going on in my life.

So, now I'm just kind of in the staring at the wall phase.

Seems like these things happen and even when expected they're not expected and whether a person is close to the deceased or not, there's always a bit of the sense of loss, probably because it reveals a real part of our humanity that we don't fully understand and maybe wish wasn't the case.

Anyway, God bless you and your family!

Did you know that the English alphabet used to have only 24 letters. This was because an "I" was used for "J" and a "V" was used for "U". Found this is a new "OMG Facts" desktop calendar I got for Christmas. Fascinating stuff.

An interesting fact I just read from my new "OMG Facts" desktop calendar is that our (US) President James Garfield could write Latin with one hand and Greek with the other at the same time. That to me is amazing.

I went to a mini-game convention yesterday, Brunswick Games Day in western Maryland. So many games...played:
Dinosaur Island (new game i own, and took with the intention of teaching/playing)
Tsuro
Exploding Kittens
Azul
Bears vs Babies
Codenames
Puerto Rico

maybe one or two others that I can't remember.
Loads of fun, and the weekend coming, I'm at Congress of Gamers, much more local to me.

My degenerative disc disease is acting up again, the pain is keeping me from sleeping, my right leg usually can't support my weight. Ended up at the Urgent care place instead of the allergist appointment I had scheduled, so I have to re-schedule that. After I hit the orthopedist's office today. Anti-inflammatories aren't doing crap to help. X-rays showed no fractures or real injuries, but there's steadily increasing osteocytes (arthritis), and most likely more herneation of the lumbar discs.

No fun. No fun at all, despite the enforced time off work.

Today's avatar is the ship we sailed back from Japan on in 1958. The USS Gen. William Mitchell. My Dad was stationed there from 1954 to 1958. Mom, my brother and I joined him in 1955 spending a year and a half in Sendai (remember the tsunami) and a year and a half in Yokohama. If we had returned to the US a week later, we might well have sailed by on the USS Gen. Daniel Sultan the ship we took to Germany in 1947. That would have been an amazing coincidence, wouldn't it?

A day set aside to remember all our nation's fallen … those that have given
their all to protect our country and the liberties we enjoy. The spirit of the
day has maybe never been captured better than in this poem.

"In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae

A dedicated physician and teacher, John McCrae was also a celebrated poet.
He wrote In Flanders Fields, his most famous poem, after seeing the graves
of fallen WWI soldiers covered in blooming poppies.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead; short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe!
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I went back to college and got my degree in 2018. Super proud of myself for that. It's never too late!

That's certainly a worthwhile accomplishment.

Going to visit shut-ins from our church this morning at a senior residence facility. Should be about 15 seniors we'll get to visit there. Always an enjoyable thing to do.

Play a few card games, sit and talk, drink lemonade...it's all good.

Having to get there from the jungle is much more difficult than walking down the trodden path indeed. Congrats

My I ask what you degree was in?

Too bad he didn't stick around. Be nice if he'd join us and get to know everyone.

Today is our 56th Wedding Anniversary. Met on a blind date 59 years ago and have now been married 56 years. Wouldn't trade it for the world. I was very lucky, indeed.

Going to do a movie today and later dinner out. In the back window of our car I have a sign, "Wedding bliss" noting the specialness of the day for us. :)

A blind date? Does that mean that love is, indeed, blind?

Thanks much! Went to see Toy Story 4. Probably the best of the series. Good plot and very entertaining. Had a wonderful day.

A couple of months ago, I got a scrip for PT for my back. I am now at the point where I'm not insanely busy, so I can actually start the program-6 weeks.

...if I can find the scrip.

Good luck on your search. We'll be thinking of you. With a partly sunny forecast, looks like lawn mowing will be the biggie today!

Hope you had a great time, Lilith! Yard work can be tiring, but also fun and rewarding. And getting to be with a long-time friend is a delight almost beyond compare.

I'm sure I'll recognize her by the raccoon coats you all wore then.
