It's a popular thread on a Toronto message board I frequent and holy crud, they're fancy pantses about their food. Half the time I have to google the meals -- yesterday one dude had, as part of his three course meal:
langusten with pesto citrus mayo

I still don't know what langusten is but I digress.

It's so freaking hot and I don't know what to eat!!!

Help me, what are you making/cooking/ordering?

Locatelli, langusten . . . I'm beginning to wonder if I have a cooking learning disability towards any L word foods.

Don't worry, WI. I predict you'll be a mainstay and an inspiration in this thread!

I've been single for a while and tend to go the PF route of never cooking lately. I will probably check out the new Tibetan restaurant up the block but it's so freaking hot that I'm hardly eating anyway.

I've never heard of locetelli and I have no clue what langusten is -- I'll have to PM buddy on that board.

My last boyfriend was Portuguese and he talked about "Portuguese" cheese which was actually "St. George" cheese.

I can tell you Steph, you'll never have any trouble understanding what I'm having for dinner. :p Could be chili-mac (one of my specialities) or marinated chicken breasts with baked potatoes (a mainstay from Mrs Aqua). But I don't think there is anything we normally eat that starts with an 'L'. :p

We boil it on the stove and when it's mushy, add some brown sugar and margarine (1 tbsp of each apporx.) and mix it all together....

OMG OMG I just had soooooo much Tibetan food and will pass out in about four seconds.

Tibetan food! Tee hee! It cracks me up to say! While I waited for my take-out order, I walked the pup but went back in the restaurant to stare at their beautiful portrait of the Dalai Lama. :D

It's like a combo of Indian/Chinese/Mongolian food but hotter, I swear! They gave me "lassi" while I waited, a yogurty drink (they're lucky/I'm lucky I'm back on the meat bandwagon for a bit cuz it was enough meaty/dairy protein to help me climb Everest).

Good food, zzzzzzzzz, must. pass. out. now.

Steph, I've been trying to find out what "langusten" is and the nearest I've been able to figure is it's related to lobsters ... a form of crustacean. All references seem to be in German but I've been unable to get a literal translation.

One 'English' paragraph was, "Beside Langusten can be prepared also lobsters, emperor garnet (Scampo) and giant shrimps like the Tigerprawns in a fruchtigen Tomatensauce. All kinds of crustacean profit from slow refining by moderate heat. Thus the meat remains tenderly and juicy."

I know that doesn't read well, and don't know if that helps, but it's about the best I could do. :rolleyes2

Yay to the bump! I kept meaning to find this thread again but I guess I was too busy eating!

Today was a stir fry but yesterday was gigantic spareribs & a potato salad with a bunch of different mini taters with dill.

The day before was unreal! Cod, giant shrimp and scallops in bacon! I am so unvegetarian now!

^^^Looking at all the yummy stuff and still contemplating that stuff Steph doesn't know wtf it is!

Shame too...cause till just this Friday I had a German girl working with me...and I am sure the spelling is definitely German and I coulda asked her for exactness. Where's "German Steve" when we need him??? *sigh*

Anyway...to get back to the topic...Mr. Lixy is in charge of meals this summer (and prolly all summer's before this one) as I have no time to plan meals and shop for them and cook. He does the BBQ thing nearly every night. Tonight we are having fresh Blue Fin tuna on the grill (mmmmmmmm), corn straight from the farm down the street (picked today) and sliced tomatoes from Jersey (baby sis...from Jersey...came for a visit last week)!

He'll grill the tuna just slightly because it's so fresh that you could use it for sushi (sp?) and it's prolly the best tuna I've ever had. His boss goes out for a day and brings us some of his catch. Can't overcook it or it'll be ruined. Has anyone ever had fresh (never frozen) tuna steaks straight from the sea to your table? OMG! It's good eating personified!!!!!

Steph
08-30-2005, 10:04 AM
I grew up on the ocean. Not too long ago, they caught a 600-lb. tuna near my place. I wish I had been on the shore when they brought it in!

I was lucky enough to have a piece of cod almost straight from the ocean as my last meal before I became vegetarian. I think I shed a few tears at its unbelievable goodness.

For those (few :D ) who enjoy tales of my multicultural city (apologies to the cheesecake haters *cough Aqua & osuche cough*:

Eating ugali and cheesecake (from the Toronto Star)

There's an intriguing food scene, ever so tiny, emerging on Donlands Ave.

Here, in the first block south of O'Connor, a cluster of food businesses straddles the especially wide East York street.

There's a European bakery, a deli, two paan shops, an African/Indian restaurant and a shop for Mennonite/Amish meat.

It's these last two food havens — Simba Grill and Fresh From the Farm — that deserve consideration.

Let's start with Simba Grill and a bowl of coconut curry sided by a lump (there's really no better way to put it) of ugali.

Ugali, the staple food of Africa under various names, is presented here as a boiled mush of white cornmeal and cassava flours softened with margarine. You get some with any order of curry or coconut curry.

"You take a chunk with the hand, roll it and make a hole with the thumb and scoop it and eat," says owner Sultan Jessani, dipping some ugali into a simple coconut curry with chicken.
