Just wondering if it’s primarily volume, processing and distribution efficiencies that give us this advantage  or are your middle maggots:redghost: and political parasites :redghost: the factor that drives it up so high for you?

You guys in US don't know what high fuel prices are , haha , where I am it's 92-94c/ltr for regular unleaded and 97-99c/ltr for premium. Our federal govt. has it's hand in the pockets of the fuel buyers to the tune of about half of that and then you got state govt. dipping in for about 20c worth .
Your pollys in the US don't have the balls to hike up your gas prices for fear of being voted out of office .

Paying $1.24, I used to be a big 93 octane buyer with no ethanol. Last month when I bought my new car and was reading the owners manual (yes i read the whole thing) it was completely against using anything above 87, said after lots of studies there are little to no benefits using it, so I am not giving an extra $.20 per gallon to the oil companies any more.

STO---The octane of the gas that you use;should be based on the
compresson of your engine. Before the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Loredo(sp?)that I just got for my wife;I bought her a new 1999
Pontiac Grand Am GT.It had a Ram Air V6 engine. The dealer said
that you could use Regular 87 octane in it.I never did.I would hate
to see the inside of the engine if I did. They'll tell you anything to
make a sale.When we bought it;the salesman;told my wife;all kinds of wrong things.My best friends father&granfather owened
the Pontiac dealership;in my home town.I was working with their
Head Mechanic;when I was 12.It's a good thing that I was with
her because I knew more(mechanically)about the car then the
salesman did! Irish
P.S.I love Pontiacs!
Up here in Ontario eh! Gas prices are cheaper during the week than on the weekends!
Usually during the week 65 to 68 cents a litre and on weekends depending whether it is a long weekend or a regular one it can go as high as 84 cents.....pisses me right off to say the least!
I guess they bring in special blends for the weekends.

Well, gas here is 1.85 a gallon right now, and it would take about 25-30 to fill our bonneville. Right now, though, my dad is fixing the muffler, so I'm borrowing his 2002 F-250. Yesterday, I put 10 in during the morning before driving from his town to a bigger town about 20 miles away, then 20 miles back to his town, then 75 up to our town, and it was on E, so last night, we put 15 in, and it's just shy of a quarter of a tank. I shudder to think that it'd take almost 60 to fill that monster.
My dreams of having a nice big "redneck" truck have been shot in the foot after putting $25 in gas into his yesterday alone.
*Edited to add: This was for grade 87, the cheap shit. Mid-grade (89) is at about 1.95, and high octane (93) is at about 2.05 right now.
I remember when I first got my liscence 9 years ago, that gas was just starting to rise above $1.00/gallon, but that you could still get lucky some days, in come in around .97/gallon. Shortly after that, gas prices got up to around a shocking 1.20/gallon, and a tv station did a deal with a gas station to where they lowered their prices to .90/ gallon for 5 hours from like 12:30 to 5:30 so they'd get the lunch hour traffic and the rush hour traffic that day. They had people lined up in the streets down 5 blocks on one of the busiest cornors of the 2nd largest city in Michigan for almost 8 hours.
They said they got almost 15x the business that day as they usually do, and since then, have done it regularly about 2x a year.

About $1.97 a gallon regular, and considering how much I drive about $200 a month
3.8 litres equals 1 US gallon and I just purchased gas at 76.8 cents per litre
so about $3.00 a US gallon
I hate metric.... :hair:
My car is a diesel, which is currently averaging around £3.86 a gallon....... that's just under $6 a gallon!!!!!! :D
Saying that, a US gallon is actually slightly less than a UK gallon (I can't remember the fraction off-hand), but even so...... and you guys think you've got it bad!!

We get is a bit cheaper than the rest of the country because we pay a fuel levy in our vehicle registration
The fuel prices are a killer....i drive 75km per day for work alone...cost me approx AU$35-40 per week to run my car (think its time to seriously look at getting the motorbike back on the road!)

Public transportation is almost an unknown word in Iowa, and, Irish, so are jobs in certain sectors. Believe me, kleclere and I have searched for MONTHS (Cheyanne, jump in here anytime :D ) for something closer, even at a lower wage. Fortunately, he drives a pretty fuel-efficient car, but it's painful, no matter who you are or how far you have to drive to make a living.
Unfortunately, gas prices are one of those things over which we, the consumers, have limited control beyond carpooling, unnecessary trips, or "frivolous" driving. :(

WHERE TO BUY YOUR GAS,
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW
READ ON--
Why didn't George W. think of this?
Gas rationing in the 80's worked even though we grumbled about it.
It might be good for us
The Saudis are boycotting American goods.
We should return the favor.
An interesting thought it to boycott their GAS.
Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting more money into
the coffers of Saudi Arabia. Just buy from gas companies that don't
import their oil from the Saudis.
Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill-up
the tank, I am sending my money to people who are trying to kill me, my
family, and my friends.
I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil companies
are the best to buy gas from and which major companies import Middle
Eastern oil :
Shell............................. 205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco......... 144,332,000 barrels
Exxon /Mobil............... 130,082,000 barrels
Marathon/Speedway... 117,740,000 barrels
Amoco............................62,231,000 barrels
If you do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount to over $18
BILLION!
Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil:
Citgo.......................0 barrels
Sunoco.............. .....0 barrels
Conoco...................0 barrels
Sinclair....................0 barrels
BP/Phillips..............0 barrels
Hess........................0 barrels
ARC0.0 barrels
All of this information is available from the Department of Energy and
each is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are
importing. Irish

Man, I have thought long and hard about a reply to this post. I think that I am going to be on the outside here and say that I do not mind the high gas prices... it will finally force us to think a little more about huge ass vehicles here in the US as well as considering other fuel sources (however, this does not mean I condone the current thinking with hybrid vehicles or fuel cell cars... they are just as bad with either huge battery packs or with a fuel that takes more energy to "bottle" than it delivers). In any case... I could go on for quite a while about all of this but will choose to just duck out of the thread.
And re: the post about middle eastern oil and the boycott, a little research should lead y'all to see that even though they are a main supplier of oil we only really import ~15% from them... it's the ability of OPEC (which also includes South American companies) to control the price that makes a difference. Of course it might also make a difference if the U.S. decided to modernize refineries (which we have not done in many years) or get their heads out of the clouds when it comes to the idea that we are somehow entitled to cheap fuel as long as it does not have to come from somewhere that would pollute our own lands. And I also do not think that it is so bad that a gallon of gas might cost more than a gallon of milk... oh, wait... we actually pay to keep the price of milk high...
Maybe we should consider finding a way to harness methane from the dairy cows... heck, they only eat feed... which we pay our farmers to no grow!
CRAP! I'm on a soap box again... I'm bailing now while I still can. I better go tank up the SUV while I still can afford it (yes, I actually do have a V8 SUV which I use in winter as it is a 4WD and to tow a trailer... other times I drive a nice 2.0L car... which in some countries is still considered outrageous!). DOH!... I'm going now....

Interestingly enough, Denton County, Texas has recently unveiled their plan and it's "success" for alternative fuel sources. It's not a new discovery, but they are one of the first in the nation (or at least local news sources say so) to take advantage of bio-diesel. They made a $650,000 USD investment in using methane gas captured from landfills and refined/recycled restaurant grease to produce bio-diesel for all the counties vehicles. Presently they are able to supply the fuel to themselves for about $1 USD/gallon. Part of the longer term plan is to produce more than the county can use in it's vehicles and sell to other sources. They believe the $650,000 investment will pay off quite quickly with the rate at which fuel prices are rising.

Just paid $2.19 a gallon here.... I used to be able to fill up the car with $20, now it takes $40... :(
This really hits us hard. We don't go on trips to begin with because we can't afford them. We don't make unnecessary trips into town (we live in the country) if we don't have to. We do drive 40 minutes away to do our shopping because the amount of gas used doesn't bite into the amount of $$$ we save by going to a larger city to make our purchases. We can buy a gallon of milk 80 cents cheaper in the city than in our small town. We save around $20 - $30 weekly doing our grocery shopping this way. To some, that may not matter, but to us on a VERY limited budget anything helps. This, I am afraid, isn't going to be true for very long. Not only is gasoline going up, but the products that are delivered by vehicles are also going up to compensate for the cost of delivery.
.........and our wages aren't keeping up either.. :(
Part of me resents those who complain about not being able to take their 2nd vacation of the year because gas prices are too high. I also cringe when someone who owns a $40,000 vehicle or a really nice boat complains about not being able to go fishing or boating because of high gas prices. I become angry when I hear people who own vehicles that get 5 miles to a gallon complain about how much money it takes to fill up their tank and in the same breath make plans to go to a really expensive dinner - and that the cost of that one meal would feed my family for a week.
To each their own, but don't bitch to me about that kind of stuff - I just worry about putting food on the table for my kids, getting them to school, doctor appts, sporting events and friends houses. I worry about how I am going to put a meal on the table vs. having enough gas in the car to get me to work to earn the money I need to keep my family going for the next 2 weeks until I get paid again. I worry about if I am going to be able to afford the LP to heat my home in the winter or if we are going to have to wear layers of clothing just to keep warm.
Our neighbor has horses - I keep looking at them and then at wagons..... hmmmmmmmm?

Looking for an E85 gas station. E85 is only 15% gas and 85% ethenal. There are only 400 stations in the US. GM has a large number of cars that use E85 and most Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep V-6 3.3 liter engines will use gas,E10 or E85 Ford also has a numver of cars that will use E85. You will not get as good gas milage with E85, only about 75% of gas.

The thing about ethanol fuels is that it is yet another fuel where you are creating it by using a good deal of energy and resources for a fuel that is not comparable to the ones it replaces... it does burn a lot cleaner which is a good thing. My current take on all of it is hoping that others follow some of the leads in those that are producing and using bio-diesel (oil from soy or corn). With some of the recent advances in filtration we can make a diesel run rather clean. If you then followed that up with creating a high efficiency diesel generator that could provide power to an electric drive train... oh well.. some day.

Just wait a few months until they've conditioned you $3/gal. They know EXACTLY when you will be paying $4/gal. I'm sure precisely when and how much each bump will be are on a spreadsheet, along with a cross reference for each press release of justification.

You know what's really irritating, that fuel is one of the few things we buy that doesn't "add the taxes on" when you pay for the purchase. Almost a third of our price is taxes! They just don't tell you that.

I read an interesting article in the Globe about the discussions on setting world gold prices for the day at Scotiabank in London. Interesting. The rich get richer, you say?

The London Gold Fixing is, I believe, set by the Bank of Nova Scotia, Barclays Bank, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Société Générale. I thought it was done over the phone. Oh well.

If you go there for a fillup every time, you could save maybe ............... $2.80 ............ if you have a 20 gal tank and get at least 20/mpg ............... for only $8.25 worth driving.

what cracks me up is the difference in fill-up stations that are RIGHT NEXT TO EACHOTHER. there's an exxon, a lukoil, and a hess all at the same intersection. about two days ago: hess-2.89, exxon-2.93, lukoil-2.96 - and there were cars at all three! cross the street to save a few cents a gallon ya gd idiots.

I spoke with my daughter yesterday, and she told me that gas was $3.75 / gal in Los Angeles. That is ¢86 / gal more than what I pay in Baltimore! I wonder what causes such a great difference?

BlondeCurlGirl,
Indeed so! My daughter, a student in southern California, wanted to surprise my wife, who was on a business trip in Phoenix. After we worked up the round trip cost of gas and she looked at her bank account, she decided that calling her mom made more sense than visiting.
Expensive stuff these days!

In my out-of-town runs, I've learned to keep an eye peeled for remote locations along the interstate with lower gas prices (usually truck stops with a set of pumps for autos as well)...coming back from a l-o-n-g run to KY last week, found a favorite spot just north of TN/KY line that had reg/$2.53, yesterday on the trip back from another intrastate o.o.t. found several regular stations, all $2.49 or *less*...I never look a gift horse in the mouth, but this always makes me wonder...how in the cathair is the gas always cheaper in places that I KNOW had to be more expensive to transport it there?!?
jseal

scotzoidman,
Lower demand in remote locations perhaps?
I just filled up last night ... $3.57 per gallon ... I get the middle grade at Chevron ... jseal ... the difference is that California has VERY high state taxes on the gas - I believe it is used for road work of various kinds, but I know that I haven't talked with anyone from another state that has as high of gas prices as we do here in CA. :(

could be the local and state taxes, too, scotz. *shrug* maybe....at least i think in most places there are local and state taxes on gas in addition to the federal tax

I need to find a website.... it showed the amount of tax per gallon by state... It was interesting... I do recall that CA was the highest. Now what they are doing with the taxes I'm not sure.

Its 2.63 here
yvw ... also there are city and county taxes added in which will account for differences ... sometimes just down the street ... because that station may be in an unincorporated areas ... so no city taxes .... sometimes that can make a difference of several cents
