My kids learnt a hard lesson on the weekend....they went swimming with neither sunscreen or tshirt on and got burnt

The eldest is fair skinned and he is paying the price big time....his shoulders and part way down his back are blisters on blisters (like 1cm high). He has a Doc appointment this arvo...nothing over the counter now, even the ever faithful aloe vera plant are gonna help that one

I've had my fair share of sunburn (part of being Aussie i'm afraid) over the years...but i must say not to the extent my son is at present

You ever been burnt to a crisp? What remedies do you use?

This exact thing happened to me way back when...I was 11 or 12 at the time. Unfortuantely, that was way back before the western medical world had discovered the wonders of aloe...and since it was second-degree burns, like in your son's case, it probably wouldn't have done any good anyway.


I'm busting my brain, but no, I can't remember what the medicoes did about it.

Sympathetic head bobs to your son, I really do know what it's like. Ouch!

Thankfully I have never had to worry about it...daughter has enough American Indian in her that she turns a beautiful toasty brown even with sunscreen... oldest is auburn haired and has had his share of sunburn. Never blistered though. We always sprayed white vinegar on his shoulders - stung quite a bit, but helped the pain afterwards.

Did have an episode with some hot ravioli with daughter - put some special cream on it I think it was called silver nitrate? It did the trick - no scars.

I swear by Banana Boat after burn care. I had an episode as a dumb ass teenager with a new bikini,a garage full of bikers, and a pool to show off my newly budding maturity that left me with blisters that formed scars. The Banan Boat helped sooth if nothing else. I also soaked in cool vinegar baths.

yep...one summer a long time ago. blisters and all. damn it hurt! kept it cool with cloths and dips in the pool, then solarcaine for the pain. to top it off, it made me real sick. pukey sick. needless to say it sucked the big one and put a damper on my summer fun for a few days. now i have faint freckles.

i hope he heals up fast, sharni.

I did that just a few years ago... unfortunately it was so horrible, driving home I had the a/c on high to try to cool my shoulders, but the rest of my body was shivering. I stopped at the grocery (the only thing open that late) and though I knew better, I bought lotion as they didn't have any aloe gel. I woke in the morning in a pain I'd not known before. I dragged my sorry rear to the store and got some proper aloe gel. I was miserable for about a month but kept putting the aloe gel on and keeping it only loosely covered with light cotton or open to the air. Luckily I didn't scar, but I learned my lesson. Never sit in the sun all day with no sunscreen and never use lotion on a burn.

I've heard good things about vinegar, but never personally tried it.

Room temp. tea applied with the tea bag liberally on the burn for about one hour It's messy but always takes the stinging out. It has worked for me in the past.

if he's blistering you HAVE to keep it from getting infected -- that can be nasty. Vinegar and/or tea will have worked to clean out the blisters

That happnened once to me. I think I treated it by being really sick and laying in bed for a couple of days in agony. Not really the best way to treat it. Sorry, not really useful.

When I was younger I got sooooo sunburned on a trip to Mexico with my family. Me and my brother were playing in the pool all day and I was redder than hell. I was crying like crazy, dad took me down to the bar and got me a drink ( I think actually it was somethign pretty hard like tequilla) I sipped it until my lips turned numb and slept like a baby.

I always do a cool bath with one can of beer in it, something in it takes the sting right out, doesn't do much for the redness but the pain seems to go.

I have to be careful what i put on the areas with blisters...which limits things unfortunately..

The area is just a mass of blisters (they reckon they're mutating *LOL*) It is blister upon blister....one will break and there is another underneath...very very painful

Ouch...I so feel for your kiddos...I, being of fair Irish skin, blistered myself in the sun at the age of ten, of course back then (when dinosaurs still roamed the earth) there was not much relief for it, & to make matters worse we were having a family reunion/vacation in rural Kentucky at the time, & the burn pretty much ruined my good time & everybody else's as well...the only relief I got at all was from Solorcaine spray (a topical anesthetic that I'm not sure is even available anymore), the lotion hurt too much to apply, & sitting in front of a fan (no a/c available in that cabin) ...many years later, my #1 son would repeat my blunder, he was swimming at a friend's house & I wasn't there to monitor his sun exposure, & he had raised blisters much like you describe...as I recall, time was the only cure for his misery...
