I hope they were NOT 4 different Americans.
The United States of America consists of fifty (50) chartered states. Forty eight (48) continuous, connected states below the 50th parallel, Alaska, above the 60th parallel (mostly ) and the Hawaiian Islands, approximately mid point, near the Tropic of Cancer in the Pacific Ocean.

thanks a lot so far.
that means, there are exactly 50 stars on that stars prinkled banner, and not 48 or 49, or even 51, yes?

You are correct popper70. There are exactly 50 stars in the blue field of the current American flag. There is one for each state and the last two were added in my lifetime in 1959. Our flag (of 6 rows of 8 stars) had only 48 from 1912 until then. The longest time period of 47 years between states joining the union came when out country became a contiguous entity across the continent. The original flag had one star for each state in a circular pattern. The 13 original east coast colonies that formed the federation are also represented by the 13 (6 white, 7 red) stripes that make up our flag.
Can you please tell me of the history of your countries flag? I must plead ignorance (typical American ) of it’s current appearance. I know that some major changes have taken place just in my lifetime. I can only recognize a few dozen foreign flags and am hard pressed to making a rendering of more than a couple hands full.
(I only remember that Australia stole all the stars from the New Zealand flag. ) LOL

Yup, fifty it is!!
There are also 13 stripes on the flag, seven red & 6 white, which if my dimly remembered history lessons serve me right, represent the incorporation (?) of the Original thirteen states.

LOL @ dm383
Doesn’t really matter. We just can’t have our Sharni becoming too lackadaisical. I need for her to know I’m thinking about her.

Stole it!!....pffttttttt...frogshit!!....
The Australian National Flag consists of a dark blue background (this was just the designers choice) with the Union Jack contained in the upper hoist (top left corner).
The Federation Star points towards the center of the Union Jack and has seven points. Each point represents the six Australian States and the Commonwealth Territories.
The five stars occupying the rest of the flag represent the Southern Cross(This constellation is always visible in the night sky from Australia, and was a valuable aid to navigation for the early explorers of this country.). The four larger stars, have seven points, and are equally sized. The small star has 5 points.
Official sizes are as follows: 91cm x 45cm; 137 x 69cm; 183cm x 91cm; 274cm x 137cm.

To be techinical about it, there are 50 states
But there are 3 that are referred to as "commonwealths"
Kentucky, Virginia, and Rhode Island (I think RI is the third)
So the answer could be 47 depending on how you chose to answer it.
(Yes I know I spend to much time watching Jeopardy)

first of all. thank u all.
but at the last post u see what i mean.
as bardog wrote, there are different answers, "depending on how you chose to answer" my question. it has to do with the 1959 thing,
pantyfanatic mentioned.
next thing is, do you know all the 50 states without looking up one, two or more? me and a few friends found 44 states. i think thats pretty good (for an european).

OK, to be truly technically correct, DC is not a state, but a "District", however it is given the standing of a state.

This also is something that happened in my lifetime.
And at a time when I was old enough to have an opinion about it. I don't think they have a "standing as a state" but only SOME state rights that was rooted in voting privileges. (and I believe it was a mistake to give ANY state rights, for ANY reason without full statehood privileges AND responsibilities. )
The liars, …I mean lawyers, were very busy in this as they are twisting the rules for their benefit in every other area. But there are ONLY 50 states! No more. No less. There are “territories” and “possessions” and no doubt other legal classifications for places we have interests. (that benefit a FEW) But only FIFTY (50) States!
