Mr. Lixy came home from work the other day and said we should count our birds. Of course I gave him the "deer in the headlights" look, till he explained he had read an article about a backyard bird count that helps scientists. I had to know more!
GBBC (http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/)
I didn't get a chance (before sunset) yesterday to participate but I started today and it was easy! It's free, it's fun and it can take as little as 15 minutes of your day to help. Kids can participate and learn as they do.
If you have some free time and find yourself just looking out the window at the birds...count them and record your efforts on the link above. The site is really informative and easy to navigate. You can look up local species if you aren't sure of what is what. I think there are links on it for other continents as well.
Just thought that all this bad weather lately could be turned into a good thing with little effort. I like knowing I am helping in a activity/project that I enjoy anyway!
