View Full Version : Don't Count Your Chickens...COUNT YOUR BIRDS!

Mr. Lixy came home from work the other day and said we should count our birds. Of course I gave him the "deer in the headlights" look, till he explained he had read an article about a backyard bird count that helps scientists. I had to know more!

GBBC (http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/)

I didn't get a chance (before sunset) yesterday to participate but I started today and it was easy! It's free, it's fun and it can take as little as 15 minutes of your day to help. Kids can participate and learn as they do.

If you have some free time and find yourself just looking out the window at the birds...count them and record your efforts on the link above. The site is really informative and easy to navigate. You can look up local species if you aren't sure of what is what. I think there are links on it for other continents as well.

Just thought that all this bad weather lately could be turned into a good thing with little effort. I like knowing I am helping in a activity/project that I enjoy anyway!

Should I enter the flying monkey under 'Loons'?
I couldn't find it on the list.

WAIT!

Do they have a category for "OTHER"...where you can write in the description? Maybe they've never seen a "flying monkey" so far north!

Depends on where you are standing when you spot um...and who "YOU" is!

"Stand in the place where you live...now face north, think about direction, wonder why you haven't before. Stand in the place where you work........"

^^^ R.E.M. song!

My kids have done this as a school assignment before. So cool!

I saw a huge flock of robbins in the fenced in area outside my portable by my compost bin.

If you contact your state wildlife dept. they may have several surveys you can take part in. When we sill lived on a farm we took one one ducks and geese, and one on fur bearing animals it was a big time learning experence!

"You mean the monkey bars down the street?! "

You mean they're old enough to drink?

What would you drink them with?
