I am after all your friend who just happens to be a Mod
Any complaints or problem is discussed at great length between all Mods (unless confidentality is requested) and all input is considered before any decision is made....None of us Mods made any decision lightly...no matter what you may believe
You are my family...and i love you all...and any decision made is honestly done to protect you
I know a few have been on about censorship...it's a moderated forum...its our job...we are trying to protect you...not spoil your fun or treat you like kids as some put it. If we think something is turning nasty(again discussion between all Mods)...rather than letting it turn into a full blown flame war we put a stop to it...end of discussion
Also threads may disappear...instead of assuming we've done it for the hell of it...ASK...you may not get full details....but we will try to explain it as best we can...You may not be satisfied with the answer you get...Please understand the as Mods, we are privvy to information that we cannot always share...but rest assured if a deletion happens it would have been for a good reason and definately NOT done for the hell of it or just because we can
The above gave me the idea to start this thread
The purpose of this thread is so that all can have a place to voice concerns...complaints or just plain queries
If anyone is not comfortable posting in open forum or the subject is of a personal nature...please feel free to use one of the other means in the quote above to contact me.
You will get a personal answer from me mostly....or from another Mod who feels they can assist you

Can I tell someone to fuck off without feeling the wraith of god...I mean mod on me?

LMAO....it will earn you the Wrath of a Mod (i know cause i've done it)
If said in jest and to a friend that knows it was meant that way then yep....
But (dreaded but again *LOL*) if meant with any sort of malice then no hun...ya can't

How about if I tell them they have a big forehead? Would that be too malice? :D
Sharni
03-27-2004, 03:44 AM
*LOL*....that would depend on the context it was used
Romial
03-27-2004, 03:47 AM
Hey you! Yeah you! You know what? You got a big forehead! Haha! Take that! :D
How's that?
Sharni
03-27-2004, 03:49 AM
Well if ya feeling lucky....give it a go...i'm sure it'll get some sort of response :D
Got any other queries?
Like the other Mods, I also am happy to be of whatever assistance I can, and proud to be associated with such a great group of Mods, and such a great group as Pixies people.
The easiest way to get hold of me is through the PM feature and sometimes it may take up to a day before you hear from me ... unfortunately I don't have ready access to the Web during the working day ..... but you will hear back from me as soon as I'm on the site next.

Who are all the Mods?
How did each of you get to be a Mod? What are the qualifications?
Do you all do the same thing or do you each take care of one area?
Can you give an example of something you would be "privvy" to that we are not, that could affect your decision on something.
Thank you :)

After speaking with teddy about her questions in chat, she thought I should add something to the answer about the qualifications and selections of mods....
Kim and I selected the mods that we currently have for very specific reasons and chose them based on the way we were setting up the forums. Some general attributes of a good moderator are; availability, positive attitude, kindness, being helpful, being able to withstand criticism(thick skinned), fairness, being able to see the BIG picture, friendliness, creativity, good problem solving skills, willing to work hard for little thanks and no$$, and countless others. While there is no steadfast criteria for being selected and asked to help moderate the boards, there are definite things that would prevent someone from being asked. It is a position that entails confidentiality, professionalism, dependability, and loyalty so gossip mongers and shit stirrers would never be asked to help. The moderators have to work as a team even though they all have areas of expertise. So people who are not team players would not be chosen. Another main thing that would prevent someone from being a mod would be if they were decietful, disrespectful, or tried to fool members, being trustworthy is of utmost importance. And being computer literate enough to operate the board helps too.:D
If you have any other questions feel free to PM me. My box is always open;)

We face the same "censorship" criticism on the site I work for. They agreed to the terms of use, 'nuff said!
Of course, this site would be nothing without the tireless work of our moderators. Go Team Mod!

All kidding aside, I really don’t know why anybody would be willing to do the thankless job our mods do for us. This place has come to mean so much to so many of us because of the unique policy set down by the founders and held to by the extraordinary people at the helm every day. This is an unimaginable difficult job that we have had carried out from the start and keeps our home the place it is. Thank you all for your steadfastness and dedication.
In answer to your questions Teddy ... for me I'm a mod because I really enjoy the site and when I was asked felt that I could offer something to the site. I think I was asked, in part, because I was already very active in the stories forums with writing stories of my own.
My "job" here is probably less timeconsuming than it is for most of the other moderators since my main function deals with the stories forums ... first and foremost my job there it to make sure the stories are in keeping with the rules we have .... NOT too many rules ... no underage participants and no beastiality ... either one of those will either get an edit of the story or it will be deleted .... either of which will get a PM from me, Skipthisone or Lilith ... depending on who caught it first ... letting the storyteller know why the action was taken and if it has happened before with that same person, they will probably get a warning about continued unacceptable behavior.
So my time on the site doing my mod job depends on how eloquent our writers are during a particular period of time .... if someone floods the stories forums in a short period of time, we may temporarily move the stories out of general circulation until they can be reviewed for content in a timely manner. But for the most part, we try to make sure that the stories have been reviewed within a day or two of being submitted. Usually you will see the phrase "last edited by ______ on (date)" at the end of the story or "@" showing that it was reviewed and/or edited by that person for content ... by the way, a storyteller can also edit their submission for a particular period of time.
When we edit stories, generally the changes that are made
Spelling errors will be fixed if needed (if you are using a particular spelling for effect, if it is apparent that you are doing so, we don't "correct" the spelling") ...
Insert blank lines to break up particularly long paragraphs -- this makes it easier reading for all that come to the site and less intimidating to a reader when they view a story ...
If it is an easy fix, I'll fix the tense of words so that there is consistency in the story .... (i.e., not switching back and forth from current to past tense).
Anyway, that's pretty much what moderators do in the stories forums .... Also, when there is a controversy on site about any of the forums, we ask other moderators for an opinion on what should happen, or give an opinion on how something should be handled, as Sharni said, we discuss if something is questionable, and/or inform the other moderators when an action has been taken.
What I get out of being a mod ... a sense of pride and joy in all that Pixies is to me and to other people I have come to care about a great deal. And of course, being a "storyteller" myself, I love being able to do something to help other storytellers, as well as the satisfaction of having my stories in the same place as other high caliber stories.
Teddy, Hope I answered all your questions from my perspective.

1. I do it because i love Pixies...What it stands for...its acceptabilty of all types of person...the members mean a damn lot to me and i want to help them in any way i can....this is one way i can do that...I hope to be able to help keep Pixies as it was and hopefully always will be with the least amount of "change"
2. Love, Pride, and a sense of doing my best
3. I spend as much time here as real life will allow...and during that time i am always a member who happens to be a Mod...i scan over all parts of Pixies...if i happen to see something i consider 'dodgy..if its in my area i fix it...if it is another area i send a message to the other Mod concerned
In other words if i am here i am moderating...minimum of 4 hrs/day a day to 20+hrs/day....like i said depends on real life situations
A bit more on 'If it's in my area i fix it'
I do the 'Pic Section'...I am on the look out for material ie Beast, kiddy porn, Copyrighted images..etc
I PM people who post pics with other ppl in them to ensure that they DO have specific permission from the other person concerned to post them on a adult site'....if i do not hear back by the deadline or they admit that they dont have permission them the thread or pics are removed
I remove any negative/rude comments from anyones thread, and the commentor gets an all personal PM from me, stating that type of thing is not at all acceptable here!
Though i will admit...most seem to behave themselves in my section *LOL*...i rarely have to pull my Mod shoes on in my section...hmmmmmmmm...maybe i am scary after all :D:D

fzzy and Sharni,
Thank you both for your answers. They were very interesting and thoughtful responses. I always like knowing the background of things, the why and how come. I hope I wasn't the only one wondering. I sure didn't mean to turn this into the ''teddy asks a Mod" thread. :D

Sharni for showing me the right direction and opening my eyes TY

Thank you Pixies Mods.

Sharni and fzzy already expressed my feelings about being a mod.
Quite honestly, I stand in awe of these ladies and especially Lilith for the work they do. They are absolutely the very best.
Like they've said, I love Pixies. I have for the almost two years I've been a member and I just feel happy when I can do anything to help keep the place running smooth, or, when I've been able to help someone with a problem. That's very satisfying.

I have the utmost respect and appreciation for Pixies Mod Squad. And thought Sharni says that people generally behave themselves in her area...they are all called upon to make some tough calls or choices that leave them open for criticism by those that don't have the full picture. I'd have a hard time taking that kind of criticism without feeling the need to defend my actions and they all are able to maintain the confidentiality that helps to keep a high level of respect between us Pixies.
Thank you each and every one for the job you all do. I have enjoyed interacting with you all on the boards and sporadically thorough PM's as well.

I may be biased, but I will go with Dicksbro on this one and just give kudos to those great ladies....and maybe one for Dicksbro too... :D

1) How do you decide if a thread should be just locked or if it should be removed from the board completely?
2) How do you check someone's age in here or chat? I don't remember giving any ID when I joined. I could tell you I'm 28 or 88... How would you know?

Hi...since Sharni is off I will try to answer these.
1) We have a relaxed protocol of sorts since this is far less of a problem than on many other boards. In general a thread might be locked instead of removed if there were original on- topic posts that were substantial. If a thread begins with a post that is purely posted for the purpose of inciting an argument/personal attack and one does indeed erupt, it may be pulled. Originally I was instructed by admin to remove any off topic posts and to lock the thread, if the thread was salvagable, if not, pull it. Everyone who is a member here agreed to a set of standards and were notified that this is a moderated board and that posts could be edited or removed, when they joined. This does not remove the poster's responsibility to be respectful in their posts. Threads are removed for many many reasons other than arguments/personal atacks. Sometimes for reasons we can share and sometimes for reasons we can not. If you ever have a question about a thread feel free to ask a moderator and if they can give you an answer they will.
Pic threads that are removed, are usually removed at the request of the poster but more often they are removed because they are images stolen from other websites and not the poster's own pics.
Stories are removed or edited if they contain references to minors. If an author repeatedly posts stories involving minors after being warned, they will be banned to prevent further posting.
2) Members are asked to confirm they are over 18 when they join. Do some lie???? yes.....Do I/we catch them? Usually. I am not going to explain how I/we find out because it gives away the edge that keeps them screwing up and revealing themselves. It is the sites responsibility to ask if they are adults and to remove any known minors, we do that. I have had to ban current members who were minors when they originally joined. I have welcomed them back and helped them reregister etc. once they are legal.

I have a question. I've noticed when browsing that some people have "Banned" as their status. How does one become banned? I can't imagine that it would be easy to do.
Sharni
04-24-2004, 05:15 PM
You'll find yourself banned:
If we find you are underage. (18)
If ya continue to post pics that are not permitted...(that comes with a free beheading *LOL*).
If ya make a general pain in the ass of yaself...being rude and obnoxious.
Continuous spamming
Ya usually get at least 1 warning before a banning
Lilith
04-24-2004, 05:33 PM
and I dooooo love a good beheading:p
I have also banned or seen members banned by admin for behaviors that were injurious to the existance of the site.
Sometimes a person is banned under several nicks.
Also any person harrassing, exploiting, or threatening members, moderators or admin. are banned, after I've finished with them.
Repeated problems with a member in the chatroom could also be dealt with by refusing the person access to the site and the chatroom.
Despite the rumors, you can't get banned for pissing me off but it's not for lack of considering it:rolleyes: :p

You know there isn't Booger and currently no way for me to change that. The funny thing is that with a whole thread it is super simple to just not enter the thread but people do. I have changed thread titles before to indicate that a thread may be one some would choose to avoid.

I have a question is there anyway possible to add a search by date of birth to member page (maybe in advanced search)
I ask because I go to that other site(you know where I mean)and send off B'day greetings(they have a list of today's B'day's on their forum page)
Lilith
05-08-2004, 07:42 AM
If you click calendar it shows that month's birthdays by date. I have tried to add the birthdays to the main index page like they have at Lit. but I can't seem to make it work. I think it has to do with Kim adding the shout box. I'm not willing to fiddle with things too much. Afraid I'll have a big fuck up and we'll *kerpoof*:p

I posted a couple of messages yesterday which were grossly insensitive. I've apologised to the other member, but I now want to delete the posts. I've looked at the FAQ, which says I need to use the "edit" button - but I can't see an "edit" button. Where is it, or how do I edit my profile so that there is one? (The "posting rules" box says "You may edit your posts" - but how?)
dicksbro

I think this is the button that you're referring to ...
Now, unless the rules have changed, you only have about two hours to "edit" a post. After that, a moderator has to do it. If it's only a couple and you still need help, please send a PM to one of us telling exactly which posts (date and time help) in which threads need to be deleted and we'll see if we can't help. :)

I've always resized any pics I've posted (taken personally...or from email) and keep them all the same size. Just now, I tried to post a few "resized" pics my sis sent me into a new thread...from an AOL account, but regardless...resized, as all my others are...and it says they are too big!
Has the posting size changed...or is AOL fucking with me again? And...how can they do that from an emailed pic? Geezzzzzzzzzz!
Lilith
01-26-2005, 07:37 PM
File size has not changed.
What size are the pics that wouldn't post? They shouldn't be changed from sending them through email. That is weird. Max posting size is 150KB.
LixyChick
01-28-2005, 05:45 AM
Now that's where I get hung up. My knowledge of KB and all the other byte sizes is nil! In my photo program I have a "resize" button I click...and through trial and error, a long time ago, I figured a size that is compatible with this site. I usually take the largest number (example:1260x1045)...and keeping the pic in proportion (the program does it)...I resize the largest number to 500x____(<---whatever it comes out to be). It doesn't say what KB size that is...just that it's 500x____ (whatever). All I know is that they ALWAYS fit whenever I posted that size before...so it confused me when I kept getting the "too big" message.
To be honest...I've never known how to find out the size of anything...and only through this program can I "resize" something to be accepted here. If I right click and keep a pic in "save picture as" and rename it and then open my photo program and retrieve it from there and click my "resize" button in that program...it'll tell me that the pic size is ____x____...and choosing the largest number, be it the width or height, I leave the "keep proportion" button ticked and change the largest number to 500.
Does that make sense? I'll try again this morning, to post the new thread I was trying to post. If you don't see it up...you'll know I still couldn't do it...k?
Lilith
01-28-2005, 05:52 AM
I know exactly what you are saying because that is how I normally do it too but while that is resizing the dimensional size of the pic to the permissible file size usually, it will not always because file size does not directly refer to the physical (pixels) size of the pic. That just happens to be one way to change a file's size. The other is to lessen the quality or compress it tighter. On my program I am also given the option to store it at various qualities. This will also change the file size. Sooooooo if you have photos taken at a higher resolution then some times you need to change both dimension and compression.
LixyChick

In my documents (where I've stored these pics) I set my cursor over the pic to ponder the situation and lo and behold a box dropped down to tell me these BMP's were 500+KB. I was astounded...at the fact that I discoved this and at the actual size even after I "resized" them. So...I'm learning as I'm complaining...and I got them down to a suitable size to post!
TY Lil and Aqua...for bearing with me!
Now...as to lessening the quality and compressing???? OMG! I think my head'll explode if I try that so soon after my new discovery...lmao!

to tell me these BMP's were 500+KB.
.BMP are huge hun.....better resolution in the pics but large file size
If ya can save em as .jpg their size will drop dramatically

*curtsey*
TY everyone...I am so proud of me!
Um...Sharni? I love that idea...but what do I do to save them as .jpg? When I right click um...is that option available there? I didn't even know these were BMP's till that little box dropped down while I was pondering the situation...lol!
Geezzzzzz...I hate being dumb about something!

When ya go to save them a box comes up that asks ya where ya want to save them (or it should *LOL*)
On that box is 'save in'...further toward the bottom is 'file name' under that is 'save as type'
'save as type'.....there is a drop down box there...click that and choose jpg
Hope that helps...if not ask hun

Things have been agonizingly slow for me lately but things do load. No one else had complained of the speed so I assumed it was just my issue.
wyndhy do you dump your cookies and clean out your temp files often?

I've had absolutely no speed issues....if anything its been a tad faster
If your puter is a dinosaur it just may be now battling with new software...or updates the owners have done....i dont know....just a thought

Mods,
Other message boards I suscribe to have a system called a reputation system. Everyone gets a baseline number of reputation points, then points are added and taken away by other members based on their feelings to a post. it's kind of a reward incentive for members to make thoughtful posts and remain active with the board.
1. is something like that available at Pixies?
2. Would everyone be inerested in using it if it was?

I don't like the idea.
We have members who can spend hours here each day and others who are only able to be here a few times a week due to work, family or whatever. Neither member is more or less important then the other, but I think this 'point' thing would make it appear so.
I think it would end up being a popularity contest.
Only my opinion though. :)

As long as my ass points south and i'm a Mod....that will not be happening :)
We make mostly thoughtful posts now.....as for remaining active...ppl have different levels of active :) and they should not be penalised for it

Yes, I've seen how that works at other sites and it's just not something that goes along with the general ease and non-competitive feel of Pixies. I'd prefer people post and visit as they see fit. I believe that if someone makes posts that inspire conversation etc... they are naturally rewarded with replies or a communal feeling of communication. If they post and it is not well received etc., then usually they fade into the woodwork when they get little attention or replies.

i am afraid if we did that, that our lurkers would never feel at ease to finally come out and post. I love seeing long time lurkers finally pop in and say something or post a pic.
When i became a member, i was immediately active, posting my story, and then pics, but not all our members are like that. i respect that.
it is a good idea, but just not for this site.
love, Lizz:D

Yeah sorry but i dont think that will work at all. Ive been a member of several sites and message boards where that is used and it put me right off. I ended up at the bottom of the heap. All because i couldnt get online enough to make posts.
If it was here then i would prolly have never posted. Pixies is a very easy going place and i love that, lets not do anything to spoil it.

I guess the Pixie style is why, after I found Pixies, I've spent virtually no time even looking for anyplace else. Stop in at Literotica once in a while ... maybe once or twice a month. Pixies is like home. I like that.

last weekend, I was in the middle of posting a longish message when I got a message that the board was "shut down, try again in a few minutes"...never came back up, so I saved the post for later...when I came back on today, I apparently lost my cookie that keeps me signed on, re-entered w/o any prob, but now some of the smilies aren't working...is it just me, or is anybody else having probs too...
Lilith
11-17-2005, 04:54 PM
It's not you. A repair was made to the forum, that's why it was shut down, and unfortunately the "fix", broke some things. Once you come back your cookies will be fine, avs have been returned and I got word today that smilies will be fixed ASAP.

mayhem1978
01-27-2006, 01:37 PM
Yeah i know the answer to that one. PHP has a built in checker that checks posts for bad scripts as most of them start with two capital letters.
(used to run a php board ages ago)
wyndhy
01-27-2006, 01:45 PM
ahhh...that's very clear now, except - what's php and what are bad scripts? :D
and if that's why, howcome it doesn't happen all the time?
mayhem1978
01-27-2006, 02:23 PM
ok sorry wasnt being clear lol
PHP is the programming language this message board is written in.
Bad Scripts are lines of code that do nasty things like delete everyones posts or remove all posts with attachments. These usually start with two capital letters and can be run from within a post very easily. So when things get de-capitilised its just the board making sure that the code wont run.
It only happens sometimes when the format of the post meets criteria set down. e.g the system will look for two blank lines followed by ROFL and then change it to rolf BUT if there is only one blank line it wont.

Who the hell do we have to pay, blow or threaten to get a maintenance crew to visit our village? Things sure haven’t been getting better for some time now. Did somebody piss in the boss’s coffee?
LOL
OK! I had my rant, but it has been building up for quite a while now. There are a number of topics I’d like to bring to the attention of the owners and I DON’T want anything read to me from the ‘Standard Response’ clipboard again. I don’t believe this post will upset anybody, as I don’t think anybody with any responsibility comes through very often to see it. This happens to be our home and an important place to a lot of us. Things have been slowly falling apart for a long time. We are small and have accepted that there is not going to be any upgrades or added amenities, but we have to do something about the erosion of our little corner of the world. Fix the pitiful hand full of smile we have left…… Repair or replace that link to chat on the front page that never worked right…… Make our ‘Bubby List’ do something besides add a + to the ‘who’s here’ window or get rid of it. It sure as hell doesn’t do anything with the PM’s that I’ve been able to find. (Complete list available upon request)
If there is a cost for having the maintenance man show up, please get some numbers and PM me for real.
