I don't know where people get off making non-complimentary comments about other people's appearance, whatever it may be. It's never, ever okay, and the people who do it are not worth your sadness. Then they win, and I'm too stubborn to let assholes win if I can help it.
In any case, it is self-hate that makes these people hate the zaftig among us. Don't think for a minute that they don't lash out at others as well. When we don't love ourselves, we must make everyone else one-down to be up. If I'm critical of you, I don't have to do the real work of addressing my own inadequacies, and isn't that just so convenient for me?
Victoria Moran, in her bio, was talking about how she'd gotten her start writing. At one of her jobs she interviewed an actress who had the reputation for being stunning. "She said to me: 'I’m not really beautiful, but I realized when I was very young that my life would be better if I were. So I decided I would be and everyone has believed it ever since.'"
There's a lot of truth, and a lot of magic in that decision. I try to make it every day. Some days, I'm more successful than others, but it's worth the effort regardless.
I love you, my sisters in size, and I love you, the men who struggle, too, and the men who love us.
Real women have curves. I never want to be anything but real.
