Unhappy Transitions — Joseph Barbera

Joseph Barbera, one half of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon team, died today in Los Angeles, California. He was 95 years old.

Hanna-Barbera, founded in the 1950s, was the company behind such classic cartoons as The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo and Huckleberry Hound.

The world of animation will not soon see another of his stature.

R.I.P sir.

Oh man.

This makes me quite sad.

Rest in peace Mr. Barbera... you helped bring me a lifetime of smiles.

Oh no, didn't want to read that. I had a radio show in college and once a week I did an hour long segment where I would "interview" Yogi and have it as a call in show. Not sure people ever did realize that I was the voice behind both parts of that show. Sad news indeed.

I think Hanna-Barbera's greatest contribution to animation was creating Tom & Jerry; when they were fired from MGM in the late '50's for cost-cutting purposes, they were forced to start their own company making cartoons like Yogi & company for TV; the tight budget constraints forced many shortcuts in the animation process, & when I watched some of their early work in reruns a few years back, I was dismayed at how crude-looking the cartoons were; still, when I was 5 yrs old & watching them for the first time, I didn't notice all that, & it started me on my lifelong love of cartoons...
