???for Diabetics???

HI there!
I am being selfish posting this here but I gotta make a decision soon and need some help.

What kind of monitor do you use? and what do you like/ dislike about it?

Thanks for the indulgence. I could have gone to a diabetes website but I would rather ask the people I know and trust!

Lilith, I have a Glucometer Elite. I'm not sure if it's the brand or just mine personal one, but I don't exactly trust it. I went through a period of very low sugars (like I-should-have-passed-out low sugars), and, to me, I wasn't sure if I was really that low or just a meter that needs calibrating. My mother has the Freestyle kind, which she likes--in theory. She was recently told, however, that they are not as accurate as the traditional glucometers.

Feel free to PM me if you have other questions.

Lilith---I now use an Accu-Chek-Advantage.I don't know which is
best, but I got this from the VA.They also give me the test strips.
They give me Accu-Chek Comfort Curve test strips. If bought, they
would be very expensive.I am supposed to check my blood four(4)
times daily. My civilian diabetic Dr.,has me take Lantus insulin. For
some reason,the VA,hasn't approved that yet.My wife is still working,so I get it,with a co-pay,at my local pharmacy.We are
trying to get it approved before she retires. For some reason, the
VA,will not approve Lantus unless you have been hospitalised
because of suger readings.I thought that you took insulin,so that
wouldn't happen. As usual, the Govt., makes NO sense in anything
that they do. Irish
P.S.I've always believed that the squeaky hinge, gets the oil!I'll
just keep pestering them. The way I look at it,I gave them four
active years of my life. It's the least that they can do!

Thumbs up

New happenings.I just recieved a package(via Fed-Ex)containing a months supply of Lantus, from the Va in Manchester NH.My civilian Dr.,had written a letter, explaining why I should use Lantus.I had brought it to my VA DR.,at PeaseAFB.The VA Dr. had
requested Lantus before but the medical board wouldn't approve
it.Evidently, the letter did the trick. Irish

I use an Accucheck Active. I have been a diabetic for 28 years and have blood pressure and kidney problems.

i find this machine to be easy to use but like most diabetics I am waiting for a non invasive meter. I am sick of picking holes in my fingers LOL

GG~ Do you like the active? It is one of my choices. Have you tried any of the machines that say you can poke your arms or thighs? I love being poked but not this way :P

Yes Lilith i like the active as it is quick and much less messing around than the older machines I have used over the years.
It only needs a small amount of blood and you get a reading very quickly. I have used it for a couple of years and and am happy with it.

Never used arms or thighs for a blood test

i have pancreatitis and am dreading the end result. i hope that we find a result of this disease. i am sorry that the gov't stopped T-Cell research as this could have great advantages in the end to stop these diseases in the begining stages. as a result i am in pain every day and waiting on diabeties to set in to "stop" the pain. i know that i am trading one disease for another but the pain is by far dibilitating. one prick on the finger is by far more human than a swolen stomach and pain that makes you want to curl up and die 24 hours a day. i will not go into that here but i feel for you and hope for a cure soon.

have a great day, its easter weekend, dress to impress!

-mike

lostintexas---I don't know if this will help.I drank alcohol,heavily,
for years. In the last few months of my drinking days,I was
hospitalised ,many times, for what they said was pancreatitus.
All that they did,was give me pain killing injections(Demerol),every
four hours and after a few days my appitite would come back and
the pain would leave. The pain was intense.I always decribed it as
a HOT poker in the middle of my chest!Since I quit drinking,it has
NOT come back.The 15th was 10yrs10mo. & I have never had an
attack again.I know that there are many causes, but this is grasping at a straw!Hope it helps!By the way,I STILL have diabetes, just not pancreatitus. Irish

i have had attacks every month for the past three and a half years. some more severe than others. the last time i was hospitalizes was a year ago and spent 3 days in ICU and two weeks in the ward NPO.

this thread was about diabetics and i was just commenting that i was going in that direction. i did not mean to steal the thread or the content.

The accucheck is the best no messing around with coding just drop in the drum and your good to go. Some pharmacies will give you a good deal on the machine if you buy the replacement strips from them but you have to ask. It's not as bad as it is made out to be just eat right and cut the junkfood.
Good luck.

Sorry I missunderstood the model I use is the compact it looks like a cell phone and has a drum of 17 strips so you never have to touch them and you dont have to enter codes. It also saves the readings so you can keep a profile log without actually re recording the results.
