..........but the thing is , if you ask them where Australia is most will still say "isn't that in europe somewhere ?"
.........and if you ask them when the Boston Tea Party was they'll probably ask you "which episode of cheers was that"?
I don't mean to cause offence here guys but the american education system has alot to answer for.

In response to the education system, I don't think it's really fair to generalize it or college students in that way, when there are many of us out there who have high GPA's and have always taken pride in their education-and by that I mean going beyond what's taught in the classroom and having a desire to learn more. I am a knowledge junkie! It's very true that what's being taught is going downhill fast, but teachers and parents also need to motivate children to use the resources that are out there today to broaden their education and make learning fun. So many schools today are only teaching what is required to pass a high school graduation test, which I don't think is necessarily the way to go. While I am not offended and hope I don't offend by saying this, I am disappointed that we get labeled this way and are misrepresented to other nations. Yes, there are a lot of kids out there lacking a broad education, but don't let them represent the American youth as a whole.

BlondeCurlGirl I applaud the hungry minds that strive to quench their thirst for knowledge despite the apathy that seems to have invaded your education system and hope that enough of them survive the schooling experience without becoming too jaded and disillusioned to hopefully do something about the system before the inadequacies become a real problem.
My biggest fear is that if enough uneducated people make it out into the community over there that, because of their lack of knowledge, will be suceptable to the twisted and inflamatory rhetoric of some warmongering megolomaniac with a good sales pitch who'll get them to vote him into office. Then with the resources of the most powerful country in the world behind him he'll push the whole world into armageddon.
Sorry , everyone , I'll get off me soapbox now and go and sit back in the corner where it's quiet.

Lighten Up..................America is the Greatest and that's why Nations all over the world send their Children here to be educated. No one is Making fun of our Youth. It's light hearted Humor. I also don't need someone who lives in another part of the world telling me our Education system has alot to answer for...............just stay where your at and America will Live and Learn. (I'll take Democracy over Socialism anyday) (what happened to your gun?) I know mine is Nice and safe.

It is only our national arrogance that makes us take offense to that... and not accept it as a wake-up call.
A couple of years ago, when that Japanese official said that Americans lacked work ethics, he took a lot of heat. For what? Telling the truth? The truth hurts sometimes. We need to take what is being said about us with a grain of salt and do what we can to correct it.
Quisath,
As a fellow Texan, I agree with you on a lot of things. But to say our education system is the best in the world is far from the truth. Let's look at the Koreans, the Germans, the Dutch... hell, even the Japanese - how does our Education System stack up compared to theirs?
Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of national pride -even more TEXAS pride... but I'll be among the first to admit we need improvement in a lot of different areas.
Education and work ethics are two of them.

BTW Wombat,
I think you've posted some interesting stuff...

Hmmm... sounds somewhat reminiscent of "dubya" vs. Saddam...
Again, I want to emphasize that I "love" the U.S. and wouldn't want to leave, but I have to say that anyone who is willing to do the research will find that the best educated countries (in the realm of public education) are either Socialists or Communists. (i.e. Korea, Germany, etc...)
