A golfer here...
The "yips" are really psychological in nature. A golfer doesn't want to miss that short putt and has in the past, perhaps in an important situation (like a tournament).
So, rather than relaxing and just putting the ball comfortably, the golfer tenses up. This causes the ball to be hit either too fast or too slow or just on a bad line.
I have had the "yips" before. My hands tend to grip the club too tightly (probably from all that masterbation I do!  ). I just try to relax my hands and my forearms and that usually does the trick.
Thus endeth the golf lesson for today!
