Wow! That's a tough one. Seems like there were various precursors to the game we know today from various parts of the globe. The American Indian version usually had 25 sticks the European version migrated to America(where I live) with usually 40 but some versions had 21 or 31 sticks. Today's games come in those numbers and also 50, 100 or 500 sticks, why there is even a lawn version with jumbo sticks. There are as many versions of rules as there are numbers of sticks but the most usual is to pick up all the sticks and the highest point number wins.
