If this is as I understand it, you should have heard from a COLLECTIONS attorney long before this. It would be interesting to know how the lives of both the mother and daughter have faired over the years.
Today we do have DNA testing that can confirm what your next thoughts may be. (or don’t have to be about) That ½ grand could be well spent.
NOTHING can recreate being a parent. That’s quite different than a blood line. The best that can happen is you build a “special” friendship from here over many years. The worst is that it will be as it’s been.
