SEX makes you brainy - and could help heal stroke victims, say scientists.

A new study claims that the natural hormone prolactin - produced after orgasm and childbirth - generates new cells in the brains of mice.

Last year, scientists showed the human brain makes efforts to heal itself after a stroke by sending new cells to the damaged area.

And Professor Sam Weiss, of the University of Calgary in Canada, told a science journal that giving prolactin to victims of degenerative diseases could speed up the process.

He said: "Because it can be added directly into the bloodstream, we are preparing to test how it might help strokes. If the new cells reach the damaged area before it scars, the effects could be reduced."
