The great thing about these stories is that you can imagine whatever you want going through the minds of the characters; I actually was thinking that she really didn't know he was there, and was as startled as he was when she realized that she wasn't alone in the office, but maybe she really did know. The best stories are the ones that can take on a life of their own.
