It turns out that the San Diego Fire Department employees were compelled to participate, not be there on standby in case something happened. Not the first time Fox News reporting accuracy left something to be desired.

No doubt there will be those who disagree, but compulsory participation in parades is not what I think of when I think of firefighters' jobs - particularly when they were reimbursed at public expense.
