For a lot of women, the contraceptive injection stops periods altogether.
For me, I'm not keen on the idea. You can prevent a period by running two packets of the combined pill into each other without having a seven day break, but on the few occasions I did it, I felt so bloated and in need of a period that the idea of going without one (except when preggers and breastfeeding) doesn't appeal to me at all.
My current pill (POP) causes me to have a very small amount of bleeding for a few days (rather than 7) every three weeks, which for me, is much better.
