I agree. Efforts to constrain freedom of speech, intolerance of figures of speech and use of this or that metaphor because it may hurt someone’s feeling, and the avoidance of discussion of social problems are indeed a waste of time.

They often serve to advance one political agenda over another by suppressing the expression of differing valid points of view.

... and yes, from a Yank who grew up in British boarding schools, they are indeed flip-flops.
