I rarely have European so I guess I'll go with American. My favorite would probably be Ghirardelli. Not sure if it's still there or not but there used to be a little Ghirardelli shop off of N. Michigan Ave in Chicago, near the Water Tower. I swear the aroma is still here if I close my eyes. Little piece of Heaven. I'm hoping that if I get out to California this summer that I get the chance to have some in SF.
