Slang within the same languages can be quite different. The Equadoran friend I mentioned in the previous post married a guy from the Dominican Republic. Soon after they were married he was using a word that where he is from is considered something like "little girl", but where she was from it had less than flattering conotations. Much confusion and later hilarity insued.
