75 years ago today
VE Day: the day the Germans surrendered in the Second World War.

Bravo!
|
And I just found out this bit of information:
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/obituar...-last-obituary/ Flight Lieutenant Terry Clark, one of two surviving veterans of the Battle of Britain, died Thursday, 7 May, 2020, the eve of the 75th Anniversary. One of the last 'few". But for all the seeming sadness of him not to get to see the 50th Anniversary of V-E Day, there is this: he was there for the first one, and got to se his efforts to defend Britain fulfilled. |
And, who knows, he may have the best vantage point for remembering this momentous day. Rest in peace, Terry Clark!

Wowzer. Hadn't thunk much 'bout it but 75 years. Golly gee whiz. Dat's sumptin.
|
Think about this: it's been as long now since the end of the Second World War as about the same time between the end of the US Civil War (1865), and the beginning of World War II (1939, making it closer to 74 years, but you get the idea.)
|
That is remarkable. We think of the Civil War as "old stuff" and WWII as "fairly recent. Yet to think of them as 75 years apart and almost 75 years from the end of WWII to now is simply surprising. Thanks, gg. Puts it into perspective.

Right you both are.
Without getting into a redundant discussion, the PF theorem of "Event vs. History". When we are alive and aware of a notable happening, that is an "event" for us for ever. If a happening was before our birth or awareness it is "history". Exp: For most Pixies Kennedy's assignation is 'history'. For a few of us it was an 'event' and registered in a completely different way. |
Hey, good to see you, PF. Missed seeing "The Thinker gracing our hallowed halls.
Take care, my friend! |
I even remember when Kennedy was assassinated. I was working at a Department Store in Decatur, IL and was on a break. When I got back, everyone was talking about Kennedy getting shot. Guess the word got out from the "TV" (Appliance) department and spread like wildfire. Came as a huge shock, though, coming off my break and hearing that.
