Big Ben Looses his "Bong"

Maintenance and cleaning work to the Westminster clock means the chimes of Big Ben will not be heard until September. (Full Story here - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6941611.stm)

Seems a little sad to not have one of the UK's most well known landmarks fully functioning.

No real point to this thread other than I think it's a fairly interesting story!

I wonder if it will cause the people who hear it on a regular basis to be off kilter for a bit?

I lost my bong years ago, & it didn't make the news...

Of course, I really wasn't looking for attention to be drawn to it...

LOL @ scotz....

I found the information interesting as well - especially the historical tid-bits.

I don't have my bong anymore either scotz...but I still have my bing! (<---Not to be confused with the cherry...cause I lost that years ago. But I still have the box it came in!)

Oh Ben...we pine for your chime!

When my oldest was little we had a clock that chimed every half hour. It was a deep tone best imitated by saying "dong-dong". She used "dong-dong" to refer to not just that clock but every clock and wristwatches too.

We went out to eat where there happened to be a chiming clock on the mantel. After it stopped she sat thinking for a minute and then asked loudly, "Daddy where your dong-dong?" We knew she meant his wristwatch but we got some really funny looks. LOL

Am picturing some little one staring at Ben and wondering where his dong-dong is.
