Greatest Love Song of All Time..........

What is the absolute greatest love song of all time? I have lots of favorites but want to know what all of you think. I know we have discussed *F* Me music but I am looking for love songs. I guess for some those will be the same. Tell me who sings it if you know too. I, for example love, Al Green's Let's Stay Together but I am not sure if it is the greatest. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~>Lilith

Sharni 02-04-2002 08:19 PM

Brings to mind a wonderful slow dance ;) which is the best part of a slow love song. That rhythmic sway........~~~~~~~~>Lilith

Nubian 02-04-2002 09:18 PM

"House is not a home" Luther Vandross.

Nubian 02-04-2002 09:19 PM

Also, "anyone who had a heart" --Luther, again.

Nubian 02-04-2002 09:21 PM

One more...

"I'm All Out of Love"--Air Supply. And almost anything my Frank Sinatra.

I agree with you that just about anything by Luther Vandross is a good choice. *Ahhh!* swoon *melt!*~~~~~~~>Lilith

I'm dating myself here, with my choice of group's and the song is more recent, but my favorite is the one that my wife and I call "our" song.

When You Love a Woman by Journey.

They were much more popular in the mid-late 80's than when they did this song back in 1997, but its words happen to fit our situation almost perfectly.

Also along this line is romantic music by Jim Brickman..most of his is instrumental, but it sets the mood very well.

sugarfreecandy 02-05-2002 01:38 AM

Favourite love songs... Can't possibly pick just one.

I wasn't even born when most of these were recorded. Still love 'em, though.

My all-time fave has to be John Denver's 'Annie's Song' (1974) --- just like in my own poems, I'm all about sensuality and sensory imagery. This fits the bill perfectly --- and I quote:

"You fill up my senses / Like a night in a forest / Like the mountains in springtime / Like a walk in the rain // Like a storm in the desert / Like a sleepy blue ocean / You fill up my senses / Come fill me again // Come let me love you / Let me give my life to you / Let me drown in your laughter / Let me die in your arms / Let me lay down beside you / Let me always be with you / Come let me love you / Come love me again // You fill up my senses / Like a night in a forest / Like the mountains in springtime / Like a walk in the rain // Like a storm in the desert / Like a sleepy blue ocean / You fill up my senses / Come fill me again"

Man. If only I could write like that. That song always transports me.........

Or what about Simon and Garfunkel's 'Kathy's Song', (1966) --- (I'll only quote part of it here):

"... And so you see I have come to doubt / all that I once held as true. / I stand alone without beliefs. / The only truth I know is you. // And as I watch the drops of rain / weave their weary paths and die / I know that I am like the rain. / There but for the grace of you go I."

*swooning* :o Ahhhh........ Beautiful.

More sweet ones include Donovan's 'Catch the Wind'; Gordon Lightfoot's 'Song for a Winter's Night'; Stan Roger's '45 Years'; Van Morrison's 'Crazy Love'; and Leonard Cohen's 'Suzanne'.

I'm in a folksy mood tonight, apparently. :rolleyes: Maybe tomorrow night I'll be thinking jazz (Ella, Louis, Frank, Billie, Duke... all good choices) or blues (oh, I just have to mention Eric Clapton's 'Tears in Heaven') or goodness knows what else. Medieval madrigals perhaps, or Zulu chants? I have weird taste... :D

(For something that dates from within my actual lifespan, I'd have to say 'Dark Angel' by Sarah McLachlan and Blue Rodeo or maybe Dave Matthews Band's 'The Space Between'.)

Irish 02-05-2002 07:58 AM

My wifes was always "Slow Hands"for obvious reasons.She said
that it reminded her of when I used to masturbate her and drive
her crazy;by going slowly;when we were dating!
I'm dating myself but I and; a female coworker; used to like"Hot
Stuff" by Donna Summer(sp?)when I worked at Sikorsky in Conn.
Irish
P.S.Yes;I did have my sexual daliances when younger;to prove
that I "still had it."I would kill if the shoe was on the other foot.
Is that male chovunism;or what?

Oldfart 02-05-2002 08:30 AM

Not a song, but...

It's not a song, but the sexiest music is Rachmaninoff(sp?)

Variation 18 of Variations on a theme by Paganini.

They used it as the love theme in "Somewhere in Time".

jaymz 02-05-2002 10:54 AM

hm...so many..
this sounds cliched but the one that really springs to mind is *stand inside your love* - smashing pumpkins

it's a really powerful song and it wrestles with the idea of love very well for a 4 or so minute rock song. I think you have to hear it really.

Irish 02-05-2002 11:21 AM

OF---I thought that I was dating myself!At least they made calenders when my song was made! Irish
P.S.I didn't think that they used sundials anymore.

Lilith 02-05-2002 01:32 PM

I agree

OF~ I agree tht Rach rocks!

nutworld~dating myself as well, I do not think that there is much by Journey that I do not love.

Irish~I too have a strange sexy disco thing!

SFC~ like all of your choices but I always find it weird when songs have a specific name, Annie's Song, Mandy, Kathy's Song. Harder fo me to personalize. Eric Clapton's Tears In Heaven is wonderful
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~>Lilith
Irish 02-05-2002 01:49 PM
Lilith---It's funny that I like that song because most Disco;I don't
like.Alltho;most of the things by the "BeeGee"s;I like.I just always
admired their personalities.Besides-the lead singer had long hair!
That was cool when I was younger!I think it was just the memories that were brought back by the Donna Summer song.
Masturbation fantasys!Sex wise that woman was fun;but;I wouldn't want to be married to her. Irish
Aqua 02-05-2002 02:30 PM
I don't know about 'Greatest' but "Thank You" by Led Zepplin is a fave of mine...
If the sun refused to shine,
I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea,
There will still be you and me.
Of course the musical tracks laid down behind the lyrics really add to to the whole mood of the song...
Oh yeah, and "That's Amore" by Dean Martin...
(Yes, I'm really only 30...) ;)
legend 02-05-2002 02:44 PM
my sister & her husband danced to "How Do I Live" by Faith Hill at their wedding....which i thought was really great
Lilith 02-05-2002 03:24 PM
Aqua man (oh! great wet one)
;) I too am somewhere not far fom your age (a lady never tells) and I have been told that as a small child I could only be soothed by Deano......Maybe that explains my weird attraction to Jerry Lewis:) Zepplin's a fav as well~~~~~~~~~~~~>Lilith
Aqua 02-05-2002 03:53 PM
Sounds reasonable to me... ;) I don't know how else you would explain it!
Irish 02-05-2002 04:30 PM
Lilith&Aquaman---You guys are just kids.My YOUNGEST daughter
is about 34.I'm 57 now and will be 58 at the end of this Mo.(the
27th)I'd like to have the money;that must have been lost;by my
classmates in Conn.What with drinking,smoking,racing cars&
motorcycles and enforcing for motorcycle gangs;He'll never last!
I fooled them!My only vice is sex and I have no intention of giving
that up. Irish
P.S.Dean Martin???Jerry Lewis???I thought that I was wierd.
Lilith 02-05-2002 04:42 PM
It only gets worse....
Irish and Aquaman~Not only do I have Dean and Jerry thing but I have been known to watch Shirley Temple, Elvis Presley and Japanese Monster movies as well. :eek: ~~~~~~~~~~>Lilith
sugarfreecandy 02-05-2002 05:00 PM
Lilith --- Don't worry, you're not the only weird one! If you asked me my favourite female singer, I'd probably have to say Ella Fitzgerald --- which is the same answer my grandmother (age 83) would give. And I'm only 21!!!!
And OldFart --- Rachmaninoff and Paganini are fabulous, I'd have to agree. But my favourite classical pieces would have to be baroque, which came even earlier! Bach's Goldberg Variations (I only have 13 recordings of that... Only mildly obsessive here! :o) or his Cello Suites (played by YoYo Ma) are definitely my top picks... The Cello Suites are especially good, because the depth of sound just runs through your whole body and the vibrato mirrors the quivering excitement perfectly. They're a little dark for some tastes, but they suit me just fine!
--- sweetstuff
Irish 02-05-2002 06:17 PM
First of all;I have to make a correction.It's my oldest daughter that
is 34.My youngest is ONLY 32!
Second-In case the newer members don't know.When I say any-
thing that might be construed as derrogatory about someones
choices-I am only "Breaking Them."The older members know that
about me and the newer members will know that as they get to
know my weird sense of humor. Irish
1.Colleen Erin Ahern--34yrs 2 kids-Boy&Girl.-Separated
2.Kelly Shawn Ahern--32yrs 2kids-2Boys.- 1 Autistic-Divorced
P.S.People have little doubt when I'm serious.
Aqua 02-05-2002 07:46 PM
Lilith... Bring on Mothra and Mechazilla!!!
Sweetstuff... Ella is wonderful! Have you ever heard Ravel's Bolero?
Irish... Kid is right!! I can still pass as 17... (when I shave anyway...) :D and I still play as often as possible!!
Irish 02-05-2002 08:19 PM
Aquaman43---Shaving does make a big difference in the age that
you appear.I had a full beard for over 20 yrs.When I went to a
different job(security guard)a few years ago;they said that I had
to shave,cut my hair shorter and take my stud earring out at work
My hair was only shoulder length,my beard was neatly trimmed;
but i figured that I'd play their silly game.My wife( of 36yrs)said:
"I don't understand;you're the same person if you have a beard
or not!"I said"I know that&you know that;but obviously they don't"We subcontracted for Liberty Mutual and;I saw;the sloppiest people that I ever saw there.Go figure. Irish
P.S.You didn't used to run a motorcycle shop with a crewcut!Image creates business.
Oldfart 02-06-2002 06:52 AM
Picked up from the Net "Summertime" by Ella and Louis.
Most excellent.
Johnny Mathis "Twelfth of Never" and Deano "Volare"
Anything smooth and mellow.
Lilith 02-06-2002 07:01 AM
OF
How 'bout "Come Rain or Come Shine" or "You're nobody til somebody loves you"? Very smooth, mellow great for dancing!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~>Lilith
Oldfart 02-06-2002 07:56 AM
Smoke gets in your eyes
by The Platters
sadora 02-07-2002 08:17 PM
All of your picks were great!! 12th of never is a great love song... one of my all-time favorites. I feel that I must spread the wealth of the experience of the Dave Mattews Band. They have many beautiful songs like "Crush", "Crash", and he recorded with Santana on his "Supernatural" albumn. If you haven't heard their music, check it out, and let me know what you think.
My all-time favorite is Crush.
Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers
Irish 02-08-2002 12:11 AM
Sharni---The Righteous Bros. were Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley.
The last that I knew;they were not together anymore.Bill Medley
had his own group.Do you know what Bobby Hatfield is doing?
When my wife and I were first married;I was in the military.We
used to watch them;on a TV show called"Shindig"in our small
beachfront;off base;appartment.Did you have that show there?
That was around 1965. Irish
Do you mean Trisha Yearwood or Leann Rimes? Faith Hill never recorded "How Do I Live".
Some of my favorite lovesongs, starting with mine and my hubby's song are:
Me and You ~ Kenny Chesney :D
Truly, Madly, Deeply ~ Savage Garden
My Best Friend ~ Tim McGraw
Just To Hear You Say That You Love Me ~ Faith Hill and Tim McGraw
Keeper of The Stars ~ Tracy Byrd
Or how about "Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole?
Another meaningful one to me and my hubby is "Right Here Waiting" by Richard Marx.
I could go on forever! ;)
Yeah, Trisha Yearwood, I should have said....sorry, i don't like country music at all, just thought the song was appropriate
Irish 02-08-2002 08:38 AM
Sharni---Thank You.I thought of that year thing after I had submitted the thread.It's hard to keep in mind that you're older
then most people.In motorcycling and as foreman&head mechanic
I was always around people that were 10-15yrs younger than me
I just got used to it!Many times;I have been taken for mid30s-40.
I just have to remember that I shouldn't do the thing that I used
to do. Irish
P.S.I try to live by the rule that my father told me:
There is no shame in not being able to do something!
The shame is in not trying!
