@=== Baking 101 ===@

Ok so admittedly (and according to STO:rolleyes: ) baking is not my 'best thing'. What I need to know is...

How much egg shell is too much for a cake?????:spin: :p

Eros 05-30-2004 02:52 PM

depends...is your cake smooth or crunchy?

PantyFanatic 05-30-2004 04:33 PM

Perhaps we need to tweek your oven a bit.

Steph 05-30-2004 04:37 PM

egg shell is protein!

GingerV 05-30-2004 04:38 PM

Throw in some nuts, no-one will notice the egg shell ;)

Lilith 05-30-2004 04:48 PM

LOL...It's an orange mousse cake :p

Eros 05-30-2004 04:54 PM

ummm...tell 'em it's orange zest!..lol

Gilly 05-30-2004 06:22 PM

Handy Tip: To retrieve egg shell easily from batter, use another egg shell. They act almost like magnets, and are attracted to each other. It will cling to the piece you hold, making retrieval easy.

Lilith 05-30-2004 06:26 PM

TY excellent tip.

Gilly 05-30-2004 06:28 PM

Another tip I learned the hard way: Both baking powder and baking soda can be used in a recipe calling for baking powder. However, soda won't brown like powder will, so it makes the cookies look like they're not done yet. You can sit there for 40 minutes wondering just why your cookies look like they're dough still, until they smell burnt. Yeah, it helps to grab the right one. ;)

:p

LOL @ Lil....

LixyChick 05-31-2004 01:56 PM

Damn you Lil! I came in here to get baking lessons!

I have a question too...

When a recipe calls for, say, two eggs...why don't they ever, ever, ever say what size egg to use? I mean...I know peeps who only buy large ones...or medium ones...or whatever. I only buy JUMBO eggs. So if a recipe calls for two eggs...will one jumbo egg suffice? It's been a burning question since they've answered the "chicken crosses the road" one. Dontcha think?

And don't go off on, "You mean you know the answer to the chicken crossing the road thing?" either! I need an answer to size...damnitalltohell!

LOL!

Scarecrow 05-31-2004 03:15 PM

Does size really matter????

I thouhgt it was how you used it that mattered

I had wondered that too one time as well! The answer that I received from a wonderful grandma type person (don't wanna say old) who baked a lot was this...

The eggs are used in recipies in order for the dough/batter to rise. If you use jumbo eggs, just use the egg whites and throw away the yolks. The yolks don't do much unless you want added color to say yellow cake. That is why, when making a white cake, you don't use the egg yolk...

The only difference between the jumbo egges and large/med eggs is the yolk.

Cheyanne 05-31-2004 03:42 PM

Isn't yolk a strange word?

Must add that to the list of burning questions.... who came up with that name for the yellow/orange center of an egg? Chickens.. where is STO when you need him?

Lilith 05-31-2004 09:18 PM

All recipes unless otherwise stated are referring to large eggs.

LixyChick 05-31-2004 09:34 PM

TY, TY ladies! Now if only I had an urge to bake!

P.S. Chey...Yes, yolk is a strange word. I know what ya mean! I feel the same way when I say "garbonzo"...as in the bean. Who comes up with this shit?

naughtyangel 06-01-2004 06:12 AM

<<<< couldn't manage to bake a cake if it were the only thing stopping the universe from collapsing in on itself

Lilith 06-01-2004 06:21 AM

It was ugly but tasted delish :slurp:

Gilly 06-01-2004 07:06 AM

-giggles- Good job, Lil :)

skyler_m 06-01-2004 09:26 AM

believe it or not, i bake very well. in fact, it's something i very much enjoy doing. I actually taught my wife pretty much everything she knows about cooking and baking.

Let's have a bake sale!

Lilith 06-01-2004 10:29 AM

Make no mistake...I can cook, and have the butttttt to prove it but baking is a math and science skill and not my forte :p
