Question:

How come EVERY PARENT thinks their infant is going to be a genius??

Then later, once they start school, they stop mentioning how super intelligent their kid is because most likely their child is not (judging by the school tests). I just don't know why parents always say their child will have an IQ of 500 or something. From my studies, life isn't really that great for a genius anyway....especially as a child.

Irish 12-20-2002 10:20 AM

2 Daughters,both in their 30s.4 grandchildren.3 boys,1 girl.My
daughters each have two children.Youngest daughter-1son &
1 autistic brother.Oldest daughter-One son & one daughter.
I have a picture of my oldest grandson, sitting on my motorcycle,
when he was 1yr old. Both daughters used to ride with me,so
motorcycling is in the family blood. Irish

Lilith 12-20-2002 10:20 AM

Lorelei~ small children/babies often represent the hopes and dreams of their parents...........as time goes on the kids teach the parents that the parent's dreams are not the ones that matter:p

Summer 12-20-2002 10:23 AM

I have 5, no wait make that 6! lol
A son (8 years old), a daughter (4 years old), a husband (32 years old~ lol), a boxer dog (8 years old), a tabby cat (2 years old), and a siamese kitten (3 months old)!!!!
ugh

<<<How come EVERY PARENT thinks their infant is going to be a genius?? >>>
Shouldn't parents always believe in their children's capabilities!! In my opinion if the parent doesn't believe in the child how will the child learn to believe in him/herself. Sorry I didn't mean to stand on this soap box.

Lilith 12-20-2002 10:27 AM

*Lilith snatches the soap box knocking Summer to the ground*

Oops did I do that???????????????:o

I'd rather believe my child will have good common sense--which is more important. :)

Irish 12-20-2002 10:59 AM

Lorelei---If you bring your kids up right, they will have common
sense.I always imparted to my children, that being smart is
important but in my opinion "Common Sense"is what gets you
by! Irish

Aqua 12-20-2002 12:35 PM

I see Lorelei's point. I've been around so many parents who go on about how the young 'un started walking at only 6-7 months and said their first word at 6 months or any other of several different observances which surely must mean the child is easily as brilliant as Wile E. Coyote, who we all know is a Suuuper Geeenius. :p I would say (and it's quite possible I'm wrong, I'm just generalizing based on personal experience) that the majority of parents verbally extol the extraordinance of their youngster to brag more than anything. "That's my child, the genius. Yup, MY child. Came from me, that kid. Uh-huh, genius." I totally agree we should believe in our children, but I think some parents expect or demand more of their kids than is reasonable.
*Jumps up just as Lilith kicks the soap box*
Ok, ok, I'm done... :p

BlondeCurlGirl 12-20-2002 01:27 PM

None of my own yet... hopefully I'll have them by the time I'm 30 though. Gotta focus on starting my career right now. :) But I really can't wait...I love spending time with my friend's 2 year old daughter, who calls me her "aunt."

DallasLiving 12-20-2002 01:43 PM

I have one little angel.....she is the light of my life and for a while when things were the roughest, the only reason I even got out of bed. She will always be my life. :)

skipthisone 12-20-2002 02:27 PM

My grandpa used to say that when I would drive him somewhere..."Watch out, don't hit that kid, never know when one of the bastards might be one of mine I don't know about"

me_carl 12-20-2002 02:28 PM

LOL @ Lilith, I was going to use that line, having been a sailor. Oh, heck I still will...

He is already 15 yrs old, 6', and 230lbs. You might say that I look up to him. Great kid though!

It’s an instinctual thing Lorelei.
You’ll have to excuse us.:o
It’s what keeps us from eating our young and allows us to teach them to write:cool:. Not always the best decision, but it keeps things going.

dzbuster 12-20-2002 05:59 PM

lorelei my usual brag isn't about my daughter's intelligence......hell the smarter one is the dumber one feels.
my brag is on her guts, coordination, size and toughness (both mental and physical). from riding all rollercoasters up front with her hands up to whipping ever kid in her daycare to telling me to buy a big harley (at 3) so she could ride to the way she handles her mom and mine's imature divorce and treatment of each other.
my daughter not only is a survivor but kicks ass on obstacles. if you got a problem with that
i'll sic her on you. at 8 yo she's 4 ft + and 110 lbs solid lol

Santiago 12-20-2002 06:42 PM

as far as the intelligence and common sense thing goes...

Ive noticed that the smarter kids are the LESS common sense they have. Dont ask me why. Ive also noticed that the dumber kids are the LESS common sense they have.

This observation, while intuitive, is no help at all. Anyway, I have 3 kids (and Im only 19 yrs old). They are named Jane, Mick, and Guido. Jane is 6 months old and loves to sniff things. Mick is 2 years old and loves to lay on things, and Guido is 5 yrs old and needs to be put on ritalin.

ps: Jane is a bloodhound, Mick is a great dane, and Guido is a german short-haired pointer.

Vintage Vixen 12-20-2002 07:19 PM

Well and good

Common sense only go's so far.No offense lorelei but my daughter
is your age and for all she's been through in rather short life ,she has survival instinct beyond her year years, she has the gift of forgivness for what this for junkie mom put her through...i.e. being
taken away kickin and screaming along with her lil bro cuz her mom didn't wanna stop doin dope.Being up for adoption for 2 yrs cuz i wasnt ready to do what i needed to do.So if you think common sense has anything to do with that.Ya live and learn.
Book smarts and common sense well there's a thin line.See in my oopinion it basically comes from the heart...the heart is the greatest teacher. :):)

jennaflower 12-20-2002 07:34 PM

I have one... a son who is about to be 8.. and wise beyond his years.

Just a note.... now adays.. a woman CAN claim "# that I know of... ". There are women out there that for whatever reason, choose to donate their eggs to other women (couples)... that being the case... the children born are still biologically theirs..

Irish 12-20-2002 07:54 PM

dzbuster---It sounds as if you need the bumper sticker, that I
saw in the Drugstore parking lot.Every time that I go there,I see
numerous cars with a sticker on them that says:My son/daughter
is an honor student.I saw one that I really liked the other day.It
said:My son/daughter ISN"T on the honer roll;but they can kick
your honor students ass!My daughters grew up around assorted
motorcycle gang members. My oldest daughters son has had his own "Bike"for over a year.He Is 9.His sister has her own 4wheeler
She is 7. Irish

BIBI 12-20-2002 08:30 PM

Let's see I have two kids that I birthed!

Mike is 29 and married with no kids as of yet and my daughter Sandra is 27, and mother to my 6 year old grandson. I have three other kids that I helped raise for 7 years who are still an integral part of my life, 2 boys aged 14 and 12 and a girl aged 11.....then there is Harley and Rufus, my dogs (biggest kids around) AND I always have two or three teen girls with me for I run a treatment home catering to independant living. You might say that I can call my life "KIDS ARE US"........most days they keep me young and on others I feel they are aging me! ;)

incitatus 12-20-2002 10:13 PM

Wow, this has turned into an interesting thread...

I've got 3. My oldest boy is turning 18 next Monday (Dec 23rd) -ugh
My daughter will be 16 in a couple of months -the most mature one out of the bunch...
My youngest boy is 3. I don't think he's a genius... just the cutest little booger that ever lived!
...takes after his dad... *snicker*
(I guess it's grandstanding all the same)

I'm thinking this is something like pure-bred dogs not having the common sense that mutts do.

Well one more thing when one dosen't have children lorelei its easy to say whats important....excuse the bitchin but i'm pms'n
Its all good ...in a mom's eye :)

Grumble 12-21-2002 08:00 AM

Lorelei is young and has yet to experience parenthood. She has valid comments for one who has not been there. I am sure i had similar views in the same position.

I think that she is a thoughtful person with interesting insights into things and it is great she puts them in here. ponder on what her views will be in 15 years and is probably a mother.

Be kind to our young ones people remember that experience is what you have and to get it you have to go through life.

mmm thats enough pontificating for the moment hugs to everyone :)

LixyChick 12-21-2002 10:54 AM

I have one son. He is 29 yrs. old. He has never lived with me though. There is a LONGGGGGGGGGGGG story here. I will tell you all sometime.........when the time is right! It's not right at the moment..........Nope......not yet!

Have never been able to have any other children..........so I guess you could say I am childless. But then this is another LONGGGGGGGGGG story..............and I repeat.........the timing isn't right yet!

Lilith 12-21-2002 11:52 AM

(((((((Lixy)))))))

all kidding aside I need to ammend my #s.........

I have two in my arms and one in my heart.
