Even demonesses can have a down day....was thinking my fav love song is about unrequited love.......Bonnie Rait's, 'I Can't Make You Love Me'.......of couse I would just torture the guy til he caved in:D

scotzoidman 03-08-2002 11:02 PM

Lilith - you are right, as usual... Bonnie turns it into the ultimate torch song! Written by former NFL player Mike Reid, I think his version was used in the movie "Boxing Helena"... a mondo weird movie, if ever I saw one...
I'm not sure if I have the quote right, but I remember something like,
You can't make someone love you, but you can stalk them until they give in...

danziggy 03-09-2002 08:06 AM

greatest love song??

there are so many about but it would have to be one of these:

Two steps behind - Def leppard
When a man loves a woman - Percy Sledge
Bed of roses or In these arms - Bon Jovi

Quote:
I would just torture the guy til he caved in

Beat me master Beat me!
:D :D :p :D :D

My favourite is 'Time to Say Goodbye' by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman.

It is Classical, so I guess it's maybe an acquired taste.

Saddaddy 03-17-2002 09:10 PM

"When a Man Loves a Woman" Percy Sledge
"Shameless" Garth Brooks
"Lady" Kenny Rodgers
"Ms Grace" Tymes

Actually, on each Beatles album there was one song written and sung by George Harrison. They also included a solo by Ringo on each album.

Sugarsprinkles 03-26-2002 09:49 PM

Some of my favorites are:
"To Love Somebody" The BeeGees
"Love Me" Elvis Presley
"Love the One You're With" Steven Stills
"Old Fashioned Love Song" Three Dog Night (this is "our" song)
I've got tons more but am drawing a blank right now. It's past my bedtime and my brain is in a fog....

Almost right, there... first few albums there would be one sung by George, took a little while for his writing to get good enough to be included on the record... sorry if I sound picky here, just love sharing Beatles trivia with others of my kind

souls_cry2000 03-27-2002 12:28 AM

Here's a great song for you Lilith it's from the night grooves cd. "The Love Scene" by Joe

kiwi15 03-27-2002 03:46 AM

Think it's called "The Greatest Love" by Bet Midler. Also, "Wind Beneath My Wings" Call me romantic!

You might want to double check on that......just off the top of my head right now on the Meet the Beatles LP(their first American LP) George sang AND wrote "Don't Bother Me". On A Hard Days Night George sang AND wrote "I Should Have Known Better". I can't check the rest of the LP's right now as they are in my bedroom and my husband is asleep.
I don't mean to be picky either, but back in "the day" I was a huge George fan.:D (saw them in person twice too)

Finn 03-27-2002 01:25 PM

one song that is playing on-and-on in my head is an oldie, "ABBA-my love my life" so wery beautiful, sad and seemes to be written for my state of mind right now :(

GermanSteve 03-27-2002 01:46 PM

Because in Germany we do not pay attention so much to the text, i´ve got a special lovesong: John Miles: Music
("Music was my first love....")
For real lovesongs have to think more.

Eros 03-27-2002 02:30 PM

It's not exactly a soft, romantic, love song, but "Ice Cream" by Sarah McLachlan is a "fun" love song.

"Your love is better than ice cream, better than anything else that I've tried."

Ok, I have all the Beatles LPs I have, which is all of them. Anyway, George didn't write anything on "The Beatles Second Album", nor did he write anything on "Something New", and I stand corrected....he didn't write anything from the soundtrack for "A Hard Day's Night" or "Beatles '65". "The Early Beatles" was pretty much a duplicate on Capitol of the "Introducing the Beatles" LP that was released on VeeJay and he had nothing on there either that he wrote. On "Beatles VI" he wrote and sang "You Like Me Too Much". On "Rubber Soul" he wrote and sang "This Bird Has Flown". On "HELP" he wrote and sang "I Need You". On "Yesterday and Today" it was "If I Needed Someone". Then on "Revolver" (one of my personal favorite Beatle LPs) he did "Taxman". And on "Magical Mystery Tour" it was "Blue Jay Way". On "Sgt. Pepper" it was "Within You Without You". On what is known as "The White Album" he did "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Long Long Long", "Piggies" and "Savoy Truffle". On "Yellow Submarine" he did "Only a Northern Song" and "It's all Too Much". On "Abbey Road" he did "Something" (which started this whole mess! LOL!!) and "Here Comes the Sun". Then finally on "Let it Be" he contributed "I Me Mine" and "For You Blue".
Yeah, I know I must seem like a picky bitch.....sorry.
There's a really GREAT Beatles website with both their US and UK discography at http://www.thebeatlesongs.com/index.html. ;)

scotzoidman 03-28-2002 01:10 AM

Sugar, glad we cleared that up... I confess I was working from memory, and basing my statement on their UK releases... "Meet the Beatles" (1st US) was based on the 2nd UK LP, with the one GH song included, and it would be nearly 2 yrs before he got another song in (Help!). We Beatles fanatics are entitled to be picky! I don't mean to disparage George's early writing, it just takes a while to learn the craft, and John/Paul got a big head start... his work on "Abbey Road" proved he could stand up with the best that LenMac could produce... and I think we've successfully hijacked this thread LOL

vampeyes 03-28-2002 10:22 AM

Just to steer the thread back a little to the right :D

GermanSteve 03-28-2002 04:36 PM

Kiwi15:

I know "the greatest love" only of Whitney Houston, not of Bette Midler, but You´re right, this is also a nice one.

Aerosmith - Don't Wanna Miss a Thing

I could stay awake just to hear you breathing
Watch you smile while you are sleeping
Far away and dreaming
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender
I could stay lost in this moment forever
Well, every moment spent with you
Is a moment I treasure

We played this song at our wedding instead of the "Wedding March". It was a church wedding and we didn't tell the pastor, we just did it. Boy, the look on his face when Aerosmith played over the loudspeakers.... LOL

This song says it all for us......

Flynn 04-11-2003 02:10 PM

Just a few of my own nominations:

"Day After Day", Badfinger
"Without You", written by Badfinger, as performed by Harry Nilsson
"Just Like Starting Over", John Lennon
"Moments in Love", the Art of Noise (no real lyrics, but great music)
"In Thee", Blue Oyster Cult
"Rain on Me", Jane Wiedlin
"Reasons for Waiting", Jethro Tull
"True Love Ways", Buddy Holly
"Think About It", Acoustic Junction
"Then I Met You", the Proclaimers
"Heaven on a Sunday", Paul McCartney
"I Will Hold On", Moxy Fruvous
"The Last Beat of My Heart", Siouxsie and the Banshees
"You're My Best Friend", Queen
"Fish on the Sand", George Harrison
"Let My Love Open the Door", Pete Townshend
"Hit the Parade", Something Happens
"Message to My Girl", Split Enz
"I've Been Waiting", Matthew Sweet
"All I Want", Toad the Wet Sprocket

Anyone care to try to pin down my musical tastes? :)

Flynn 04-11-2003 02:14 PM

Also, "Blink" by the Young Dubliners gets an honorable mention, although it's more about a missed opportunity for love:

"Some people say I'm obsessive
To know so much in just seconds
But if love at first sight is a real thing
It just gave me a beating"

Finally, Cheap Trick would have one of the best love songs of all time if not for one word:

"All I want is a place in your heart
To fall into
All I need is someone to love
And tonight it's you"

If not for that one word, "Tonight It's You" would rank pretty high on my list.

(Quotes for all songs named in my previous post are available on request. Seriously--if you wanna know why something's on my list, just ask.)

chainedkitten 04-12-2003 01:14 AM

"Now that I Know" Shannon McNally

If you haven't heard it...download it...this woman has an awesome voice!!

dicksbro 04-12-2003 04:23 AM

OldFart mentioned, Johnny Mathis' "Twelfth of Never" which my wife and I both loved, but I think our favorite has always been "Unchained Melody" by the Platters (although Elvis did a great version).

There are several versions of "The Impossible Dream" which also are in the running. Maybe the soundtrack from Man of LaMancha.

mannis 09-22-2006 04:07 PM

Lovely thread that should not be forgotten.........one of my favourite songs would be "Joe Tex" ......"For Your Love"......wonderful memories reminiscing about some of these songs..........
