Well, as you know Diva...I have received several.....one of which supposedly came from you.....
I'd love to know what's going on.

I ran a virus scan and it found nothing...I'm truly mystified.

I have no virus also..but still getting emails with no attachements.

I think it has something to do with Irish's problem.....and it's emailling it's self to the ones in his addy book...

I have been getting the e's with nothing but the W32.Klez.
Nothing in the body and the infected attachment.

well I have never found the pixies mail at all.................................

MidnightKiss,
These didn't come in Pixie's mail...at least mine didn't. They came in my own personal e-mail box.

And BTW, each of the crazy e-mails I received had different subject lines. The most recent one purported to be from Yahoo's "post office" and stated that something it says I tried to send to Murphy was not able to be sent. And I never sent anything to Murphy with the subject it gave and besides why would I send him e-mail when I know it's very rare these days for him to be able to get online to read it?? This is truly strange!!!

I've also received some in my e-mail box. Something strange happening, but not sure what. Started deleting e-mails without looking at them unless I knew the sender, but not sure that's a protection. Let us know if we can do anything to help get to the bottom of this.

ok....this sounds like something the Klez virus does. It sends emails to people in your address book, but changes the return email address to make it look like it was from someone else in your address book. SS, that postmaster email from yahoo that you got is very similar to things that this virus does also.

I advise everyone with problems or funny emails to check this link for info regarding this particular virus:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

you can also download a tool that will remove this particular virus. better to be safe than sorry i say

Thanks for the info, legend. I went to both the link you provided and also to McAfee's home page since that's the program I use.
I updated my anti-virus program and scanned twice and it still came up clean. So I really am stumped.

Ironwood

This particular one also attempts to disable your virus protection. From what I read, you could search for wink*.exe as evidence that you've been infected.

Sugarsprinkles

Thanks for the suggestion Ironwood. I did the search and it also came up negative. <sigh>

GUYS!

This IS PROBABLY that dang Klez virus...I don't know which version though.

My McAffee scan did NOT pick this up but the free scans I do every few weeks or so at Trend Micro DID pick it up.

The thing with the KLEZ virus is that it disables your virus scanning device that's ON your computer...so it's useless.

The empty emails and crazy subject lines along WITH a familiar name (oh yes, and the size of the message, being around 100+ K's) are exactly what the KLEZ does and how it operates.

Please perform a scan using Trend Micro...the virus almost didn't LET me do the scan there. It actually SHUT DOWN my computer ever time I went to the T/M site to perform the scan. It took half a dozen tries before I was able to get all the way THRU the scan.

Here is the link to the FREE SCAN..please do it as it sounds like you've all recieved the virus.

http://www.trendmicro.com/pc-cillin/vinfo/

p.s. this was by FAR one of the most frustrating bugs I've ever recieved...very difficult to find and remove. It's a tricky one.

Good luck!

Thanks RG.....went there, did that....no virus detected.....now wtf do I do????? What's really weird is that this crazy mail is not coming thru Outlook Express...it's in my Yahoo Mailbox...and in only ONE Yahoo mailbox ( I have 3..LOL).

Just to report additional data concerning this family disease. Anyone receiving anything supposedly from me after September 06, 2002 3:48 PM, be aware that is when I responded to an empty e-mail I received, in my regular personal e-mail, from one of our active members. I did not keep the e-mail, but I do have my reply from the sent file in MS Outlook. I confirmed he did NOT send me anything and did NOT receive my reply. The subject was :the Garden of Eden.

Ok..This is where I am at..Did Norton's Virus Scan..Mcaffee virus scan and the one RG so kindly posted and NOTHING CAME UP!!
I am at a loss...but I haven't received and email today...so I am crossing my fingers. This is a hard virus to figure out let me tell ya!!!

And PF...I got your "Garden of Eden" email as well 2 days ago!! :p

m45
09-09-2002, 09:00 PM
Garden of Eden
I have had that before but from NO one here.
I get all kinds of retunes from the postmaster with nothing in them, but a virus and I never sent anything out.
Go figure.
I did and have done the scan and it comes up with nothing.

I gave up weeks ago, Norton seems to stop them all for now.
and my PC is clean,

RandyGal

OK while I'm not positive about this I THINK this might be what's happening.

You guys are probably actually recieving the virus in those emails but they don't get INTO your computer unless you open the attachments........
while those emails may look empty, sometimes there is a place where it will say "download attachment".......and I unfortunately DID do one of them. It was one that I thought was an "empty" email....but I think that's how I actually GOT the virus.

If you have used the Trend Micro then I would guess you're ok.

As far as Sugarsprinkles problem, it may be a totally different issue.

It's so confusing.

And PF...I got your "Garden of Eden" email as well 2 days ago!!

Was that suppose to be from me dear or did you mean that you received one with that subject? I didn’t send you anything that day. :(

CHECK THE LINK I GAVE ON THE FIRST PAGE!!!

an email with the title the Garden of Eden is exactly one of the emails that the Klez virus sends out

ok...if you d/l the removal tool from the link i gave....then if it comes up with nothing, then it's not the Klez virus.

the removal tool - get it, run it, fix it. good.

Sorry to hear ya got a virus Diva.....they are a major pain in the ass

Doesn't the "I Love You" virus come as an attachment??

Lovediva
09-15-2002, 08:05 PM
The attachment I got was renamed to myphoto!!! And once I opened..I knew right away.... :( :(

09-15-2002, 08:35 PM
Yikes.. that really sucks.. thanks for the warning.

As a rule.. I NEVER open an attachment in an email unless it is something that I was expecting.. otherwise.. it just isn't worth the risk.

I can only hope that whoever sent it to you had been sent it themselves and aren't aware that it forwarded to others in their mailbox (I have heard of some viruses moving in such a manner). I can't imagine a fellow TRUE Pixie being responsible...

If it was done on purpose.. shame on them :( :( Sad that some people out there get their rocks off in such a manner... don't they realize that if they used that time masturbating.. the world would be a better place? ROFL :)

Hugs.. and glad that it didn't keep you away for long :)

09-15-2002, 08:40 PM
Hmm by what you said looks like the person knew how to get a pixxies user to open it too. I suggest either scanning your e-mails or checking what the file type is before opening it. Although I have a feeling it was sent by somone who has never posted, I don't think anyone who has posted would actually be dumb enough to mess with Diva (and no I don't mean that way!)

Sharni
09-15-2002, 09:36 PM
The attachment I got was renamed to myphoto!!!
Hmmmm...well now thats just plain rude..major bummer Diva

Does your Anti-virus software not scan your incoming email? Mine scans both incoming and outgoing from my private mail...

As an added precaution....I also do not open any files from anyone(close friends included) until i have scanned it first..
And if it is an .EXE file i very rarely open them regardless of if they are scanned or not...

I got hit a while back with a KakWorm....nasty piece of work that....luckily i had a friend here at the time who works with puters and he happened to have a worm killer on disk

The puny bastards who invent these damn things need shootin as far as i'm concerned....and the ppl that knowingly pass the damn things on need to be shot as well

I never open files unless I know who it't from..unless I am expecting it...This guy/gal was smart. It disabled my Norton's and opend itself up..like it was self extracting. The guy from my service provider said this has been happening alot lately....They know people are looking and scanning for viruses.....so they are getting smarter.......they actually send 2 viruses somehow..as soon as you hit the subject line..that is one that disables your virus detector...and the second is in the email itself. All I did was open the email and not the exe file...that opened itself. I got this in my yahoo mail box...and it's only been 3 weeks ( since I have been back) that I have had it in my profile....(and luckily I have no addy's in my address book at yahoo)...

And it was somebody who is a member or who is ot registered..cause the name lovediva4u...is ONLY known here...Pixies Place and no place else....so please..let's all be very carefull...I would hate for someone to go through the mess I had yesterday!

sorry to hear of that Diva :(

what everyone needs to have is a virus scanner with script blocking capabilities. how these viruses work is that they use the VBScript which is used by windows. this enables them to do damage by just clicking on them. an up to date virus scanner should have this capability.

if you don't have that, you can disable the Windows Scripting Host by following the directions on this link:
http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/win.script.hosting.html

I haven't suffered any ill effects from it, but I received another one of those blank e-mails that showed the size of it being 123k.
The subject line was "The above specifications are subject to change." The sender was "Blufinz" and the return e-mail address was [email protected]. It didn't indicate there was an attachment, so there was no attachment to be opened.

The only reason I opened the e-mail was I thought, erroneously I guess, that the name "Blufinz" sounded vaguely familiar. Does anyone recognize that name or e-mail address?

LixyChick
09-16-2002, 03:51 PM
I actually seem to remember that nic (Blufinz) Sugarsprinkles and I don't know why! Did you peruse the postings in Men's Pics? I will check there too as soon as I get back there. I don't know if that is where I saw it and it had to be a while ago cause it ain't around anymore. Or maybe it was on one of the threads you or I posted....I'm sorry but I really can't remember. But, as you said, it just sounds familiar! Hmmmmmmm????? I'll see what I can do!

PS...I just checked in members and there is no such nic......Now this is gonna drive me crazy too! I just know I've seen that name before.......Hmmmmmmmm????

Diva, totally agree with you. These people that intentionally send a virus to hurt others are sick. Really believe laws should be passed to really punish people that knowingly send them ... 10, 20 or more years in prison (without parole) and thousands in fines. My firewall and security software has caught three virus' being introduced on my machine which were quarentined (sp) and deleted. But the fact they got there in the first place angers me like it did you.

actually the bad thing is that if they know how to telnet properly there is no way to stop them because they can access anything they like on your hard drive and even disable virus scanners thereselves before they send it.That and that email addy could be someone totally different and harmless because under telnet u can use anyones email addy u weant to send something.Example,i could use that email addy to send something to someone else if i wanted but the majority of these type people are usually to lame and clueless to have that type knowledge. What i think is pathetic is the people who abuse the knowledge of computer systems that they poccess.
