GO RED WINGS!!!!!! GO RED WINGS!!!!! GO RED WINGS!!!!
In case you can't tell, I'm a Detroit Red Wings fan. Through and through! Have been for years, probably since before some of you were born.
I think the Cup is theirs to lose this year. And they certainly CAN lose it if they don't wake up and continue playing like they did the last two games. I don't know who was on the ice for the first two games against Vancouver, but it certainly wasn't the Wings that we saw the entire season.
And what was with the officiating in that last game??? Where'd they get those officials anyway??
I would dearly love to see a Finals between the Wings and the Leafs!! Two of the "Original Six" teams......and the decades-old rivalry....What a hell of a Finals that would make!!
oh, and btw...GO RED WINGS!!!

Although I'm not a huge hockey fan, I'll be cheering for the Avs!
(I would say 'rooting' for them, but I don't want to give our Austrailian friends the wrong idea.)

Hi Xanne!
At one time, before all the expansion, when there were only 6 teams in the NHL, the playoffs consisted of a semifinal round for the winner of each conference and then the Finals. Therefore it only took 8 victories to win the Stanley Cup. Following me so far???? An octopus has 8 tentacles....one for each victory needed to win the cup. Some Red Wings fan back in the early '50s decided to throw an octopus on the ice in "honor" of the 8 victories and 8 tentacles. For some reason it caught on and became a tradition. Was I able to explain clearly?:(

About the anthem debacle, what really got us was that Americans were booing our anthem as we were burying four soldiers killed in American friendly fire. It was seen by many as inappropriate but apparently, a lot of the American fans didn't know the situation.

Regardless of the situation.... booing another country's anthem is just plain fucked up! I mean, if there's a beef with a particular player and he gets booed, that can be chalked up to bitter rivalry or whatever... but the anthem?! It's just plain wrong....

Hey, we lost the first two, and then took 4 straight! How much trouble is that??
I agree it will be a tough, hard fought series, as it usually is between these two teams. But if history repeats itself, the Wings should win the series. We played the Blues in '96, '97, and '98 and won each time. They're a very good team and it will be a very good series. I can see it going the full 7 games.
And Mulder, any hockey fan knows that what happens in the regular season, doen't always indicate what will happen in the playoffs.....So they beat us the last two games of the season...that doesn't prove anything.

Not that i'm defending the anthem debate but its kinda the medias fault and our own. Everytime there is a Canada vs. USA hockey game, its all about national bragging rights. So there are some idiots who will go too far and boo the anthem, and to correct the misconception, amercicans also do that to our canadian national anthem (ie Detroit Pistons vs Toronto Raptors)
Back to hockey, i know the wings are though and i expect a big series but Blues are due to greatness, wings won it in 97, 98. Its time the Blues won the cup.... Interesting fact... the Blues have not missed the playoffs since 1980, longest streak for any sports team. GO BLUES

Just wondering if I'm the only hockey fan around?
Sorry about Pronger's injury last night! I'm not sorry he won't be playing, but I am sorry he has such a painful, and season-ending injury.
With any amount of luck, the Wings will finish the Blues off tomorrow night. Hope it works out that way....some of our players could use a bit of rest before the next round.
If the Wings do win this round we'll play either the Avs or the Sharks for the conference finals. I think we'd have an easier time with San Jose, but for sentimental reasons I hope we get Colorado......OH BOY!! Some "rock 'em - sock 'em" hockey for sure if it's the Av's vs. the Wings!!!! And that series could definitely go either way.

Thanks, pje! Except for yesterday's game, I think the Blues put up a great fight. Yesterday being the exception because of Pronger's season-ending injury.
I'm sure they'll be more than ready for next season and next year's playoffs too. As long as the Red Wings and the Avalanche maintain their talent level, the Blues will have a difficult time advancing to the Finals. But they're a very good team, and if their ownership ever learns to keep their premier players instead of trading them as soon as they're able to command higher salaries, they will eventually get there. And once they do, they should have a good chance at the Cup.

Isn't Pixie's an amazing place?? Where else are you going to find fans who support not only opposing teams, but also bitter rivals (Wings & Av's) who can speak their minds without sinking to the "Your team sucks" and "Hooray for my team" mentality??
I'm really enjoying the interaction on this thread. I love hockey, esp. the Red Wings. And I don't go to any sports message boards or chat rooms anymore because there are so many who can't or won't get past that juvenile behavior. There are also too many "gentlemen" on most of those boards and chats who refuse to acknowledge that any woman, much less an "older woman" might have something to contribute to a discussion of hockey.

Oh, and BTW, Ottowa, although they had a team waaaaay back when, was not part of the Original 6. So the question about their current incarnation is moot.

I'm familiar with Nepean. My husband has family in the area. Some of his ancestors were from many of the small towns around Ottawa.
Don Cherry is something else! I love him until he goes overboard on his ultra-super-Canadian rants. (Nothing against Canadians, PLEASE!! I LOVE CANADA!!):D :D

Don Cherry can be hard to take, I have to agree, though nothing is as hard to take as this bone-crushing first period in the final game of the Montreal/Carolina series! 4-0 in the first period! Augh!!!! It's now 5-0!!!!!

It was indeed game 7 :( :( :(
I had an early day so I only watched the first period - it was painful enough. Thanks for the cheers, Sugarsprinkles.
Tonight's another nail biter - game 7 of Ottawa/Toronto.

Dinotopia is a new mini-series on ABC...sort of like Planet of the Apes only with dinosaurs. Great computer animation, but the story line leaves a lot to be desired.:(
So sorry Montreal lost the series! I watched til the bitter end.
And it looks like the Av's live to fight another day. (damn!! LOL)
Whoever survives that series will either be quite tired or on a roll when the next round starts. And the Wings will have had a week to either rest up or rust up. Let's hope the week off works to their benefit. This next round will be one hell of a series!!
I will most definitely be watching the T.O./Ottawa game tonight!
One thing about it, at least we can be sure a Canadian team will win the series...LOL:D :D GO LEAFS!!! (God, did I really say that??? :p )

I don't normally root for Toronto either, but that's no reason to call them a bunch of thugs. So far this in thread we've all been pretty respectful of each other and of the teams our friends are rooting for. It would be very nice if we could keep it that way.
In order to do that, I will refrain from responding to your comment of "Anyone But Detroit". I think it speaks for itself and for you and needs no comment from me.:o

I would just like to express my sincere wishes for a very speedy recovery of Toronto's coach Pat Quinn. I just learned he is in hospital with heart problems. I may not be a Toronto fan, but I don't wish anything like this on them. I hope that this can become a rallying point for the team and spur them on to victory in their series against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Reading this thread has made me sad. I have been a Habs fan for a long time, since there was no team here in Dallas. Once the Stars came here I got behind them fully, but I will always be a Le Habitant at heart;)
But alas, my Stars where on a downward spiral all year.....hardly a shadow of what they were only 2 years ago. Now the Canadiens have been eliminated also. So, I guess I will be laying my hopes on the Leafs. I would give anything to see Lord Stanley's Cup go home to Canada, it is long overdue.
I'm praying the changes the Stars have made the last couple of days will make a big difference next year. But I was really wanting to see one of my all time hockey heros, Guy Carboneau as coach of the Stars......bleh no such luck... Oh well, got my hopes up for next year!

GOOO AVS!!!
I sure hope it goes to a game seven!! Wow, that last game was a shocker....thought sure as hell, the Wings would win. But Hasek certainly was nothing even resembling a "Dominator" Monday night. As a matter of fact....he SUCKED big time!!! As far as I'm concerned he's $8 million worth of nothing! We should have kept Osgood! Both the goals he let in Monday were really bad goals, especially the first one.
Also I'd like to extend my sympathy to all the Toronto fans....I really was hoping they'd win. Who wants to play Carolina for the Cup??? Whether it's the Wings or the Avs (God forbid! LOL!) that advance, Carolina doesn't stand a chance of winning the Stanley Cup!! It's virtually no contest!!:D

Actually, he didn't suck..but he sure looked foolish holding up his glove thinking he had the puck..and there it was IN THE NET!!! Don't think I've ever laughed so hard at him before!:D
I'm sorry, I've done my damnedest to be nice.....but I just can't let that go by without comment.
I don't think any of the Wings or Avs fans can be surprised that it's gone the full 7 games. Two excellent teams, fairly equal talent, and both playing hard to win. For my money, this has been the best series in the entire playoffs so far.:)

No, Svlad, no particular reason. It just seemed unusual the way you referred to them as "my" 'Canes yet you don't live anywhere near them. It slipped my mind that they used to be in Hartford which is much closer to Canada than S. Carolina. It's much more common as you further mention to have Canadians who are fans of Boston and other teams that are close to Canada. And I know very well, too, that most of the teams have a majority of Canadian players.

I'm just curious.Is Carolina;the original Hartford Whalers?I thought that I heard that on the radio.I don't follow hockey;at all;
but I am originally from Connecticut;so I wondered.Years ago;I went to a couple of New Haven Blades games;with some drinking

Yes, Irish, they're the original Hartford Whalers. From what I've seen on TV, quite a few folks from Connecticut have made the trip down to whichever Carolina it is to support the team.

Irish, I am a huge Hartford Whalers fan from wayyyyy back (1986). As I type this, I'm surrounded by various Hartford (coffee mug, beer stein, jersey on the wall) and Carolina (miniature Stanley Cup, action figure of Ron Francis, mouse pad, jersey on the wall) paraphernalia.
It's great to see Whaler fans on TV, at the Hurricane games in the stands and outside the arena for the parties in the parking lot. Hopefully they'll have one more home game this year in which to party.
And yes, SugarSprinkles, your Red Wings are one tough team!

That may be so, but although I'm not one of his biggest fans, I would hope that he comes back for at least one more year.
Mainly because we will be losing our coach, and possibly other players as well. We don't want to have to replace any more players than absolutely necessary. And if he does retire, I'd love to see us get Chris Osgood back.
Some fool on sports talk radio overnight suggested if Hasek retires we should consider Eddie Belfour. They've got to be kidding!! The man is certifiable!!
Congrats to the Red Wings!! You called it SS... Wings in 5. :D
Hope you celebrated properly... ;) :D

Don't know whether you'd call it celebrating or not but naturally I watched the whole game. Then all the post game celebrations that were televised. By the time they go off the air it's only 2 hours until I have to leave to do my paper route. I figure there's no sense in only 2 hrs sleep...I'd only feel worse so I stay up. Have already been up since 1 a.m. Thursday...
Go to pick up papers, which I assume will be a bit later than normal. Yeah.."a bit later" alright....didn't get them til 4 a.m.!!
Took me til 7 to finish delivering....it's now 3:30 pm and I haven't been to bed yet!! Over 36 hrs!!
Somebody catch me, I'm about to collapse!!
But, damn, it was GREAT!!! And the city maintained it's cool although there was plenty of partying in the streets. Only 6 arrests...mostly for drunkeness.
Thanks for all the Congrat's everyone!! It was SWEET!!
Now, who do we get to coach them next year?? Any suggestions????

I'm worried about Montreal - they've just traded their goalie. When I was a kid, the Habs were my team but for the past several years, I've cheered for whatever team Hasek was playing for. Now that he's gone, I'm back to the Habs (though I keep it quiet, living in Toronto). I've never seen such rabid hockey fans as here in Toronto! Two guys from Toronto die and wake up in hell.
The next day the devil stops in to check on them and sees
them dressed in parkas, mittens and toques warming
themselves around the fire. The devil asks them,
"What are you doing? Isn't it hot enough for you?"
The two guys reply, "Well, you know, we're from Canada, the
land of snow and ice and cold. We're just happy for a chance to warm up a little bit, eh."
The devil decides that these two aren't miserable enough
and turns up the heat. The next morning he stops in again and there they are, still dressed in parkas, toques and mittens. The
devil asks them again, "It's awfully hot down here, can't you
guys feel it?"
Again the two guys reply, "Well, like we told ya yesterday,
we're from Canada, the land of snow and ice and cold.
We're just happy for a chance to warm up a little bit, eh."
This gets the devil a little steamed up and he
decides to fix these two guys. He cranks the heat up as high as
it will go. The people are wailing and screaming everywhere.
He stops by the room with the two guys from Canada and
finds them in light jackets and bucket hats, grilling sausage and drinking beer.
The devil is astonished, "Everyone down here is in
abject misery, and you two seem to be enjoying yourselves."
The two Canadians reply, "Well, ya know, we don't get
too much warm weather up there in Toronto so we've just
got to have a cook-out when the weather's THIS nice."
The devil is absolutely furious, he can hardly see straight.
Finally he comes up with the answer. The two guys love the
heat because they have been cold all their lives. The
devil decides to turn all the heat off in hell.
The next morning, the temperature is below zero, icicles
are hanging everywhere; people are shivering so bad
that they are unable to do anything but wail, moan and
gnash their teeth.
The devil smiles and heads for the room with the two
Canadians. He gets there and finds them back in their
parkas, toques, and mittens. NOW they are jumping up
and down, cheering, yelling and screaming like mad men!!!
The devil is dumbfounded, "I don't understand, when I
turn up the heat you're happy. Now it's freezing cold
and you're still happy. What is wrong with you two???"
The Torontonians look at the devil in surprise,
"Well, don't you know? If Hell freezes over, it must mean
the Leafs have won the Stanley Cup."

LOL SS. The Canadian newspaper with the biggest circulation, the Toronto Star, had a huge photo of Doug Gilmour on the front page yesterday. With the recent trades, people are saying this is Toronto's best chance to win the Cup since they last won, in 1967.
I recently moved to T.O. and this is a true hockey town! I overheard three of my male co-workers talking about the Leafs last week:
M1: If the Leafs win the Cup, I won't be coming to work the next day.
M2: If the Leafs win, I won't be coming in for the next week!
M3 (obviously a Habs fan): Luckily, you won't have to worry about that.
True story!
Whoa, Wings are down 3-0 for the series against the Ducks...
And the AVS are up 2-1!! GO AVS!!!!

We'll get em next year....unlike a few teams that will be leaving the playoffs in the next few days, Wings fans can say that with a straight face. We still have a lot to be proud of, and a numerous amount of young talent that will be more than ready for another Cup with the next season.
My hats off to the Red Wings... I am shocked to see them out of it so soon, but like Cabrylla said, there's always next year.

Well, it IS over..................for this year.
I won't make excuses. The Wings came up against a young, eager and extremely HOT goalie, in Giguere. It happens.
They didn't play like "THE WINGS", and The Ducks beat them fair and square.
But like Cabrylla said....unlike some of the teams that will be elminated along the way, we can say with a straight face, and mean it....Wait Until Next Year
Now that my Wings are out of it, I'll be rooting for St. Louis. They have the goalie that Detroit NEVER should have traded, in my opinion. They have OZZIE!! I hope Ozzie shows them all what he's made of and goes all the way to the Cup!!!
So as much as it kills me to say it,
GO BLUES!!!!!

P.S. Thanks for the nice words about the Wings, Aqua. (But I just CAN'T root for the Av's......hehe :p I'm sure you understand ;) )

Don Cherry tired??? Impossible!! ;):D
Well, since MY Red Wings are out of it I've had to find another team to cheer for. Since I'm in Missouri now I thought I'd root for the Blues. But they're out of it too. :( So in true American tradition, I'm rooting for the underdogs. I'm rooting for Minnesota right now. And I like Ottawa a lot too. Both relatively young teams and not in the league very long. Maybe not very exciting as far as the television networks and the League are concerned, but if they're good enough to make it to the Finals then they deserve to be there. But if Vancouver and Ottawa end up in the Finals, Don Cherry will be so happy he won't know whether to s**t or go blind!! Oh, how I miss getting the CBC coverage now that I'm all the way down here in No-Hockey Hell!! :(

Red Wings GM confirms Hasek talks
6/24/2003
Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland has confirmed that retired goaltender Dominik Hasek is considering a comeback.
On Monday, Hasek's agent told TSN that the superstar goaltender had contacted the Red Wings "several times over the past couple of weeks about the possibility of him coming back."
At first, Detroit management would not comment on Winter's claims but, on Tuesday, Holland admitted that it was true - Hasek was considering a return to the National Hockey League.

Personally i think that what Betuzzi got was warranted. I know there is a lot that goes on that we never see. But all sports is getting to violent..even the kids are getting to carried away and the parents are fighting. Maybe he was made an example of, and hopefully he didn't mean to do what he did. Doesn't change the fact that Moore is seriously injured, and who knows may never come back. Just my two cents...GO AV'S :D

Everyone says that violence can not be taken out of the NHL. The hockey at the Olympics was great. Everyone loved watching it. That was true hockey. It required skill, not a goon squad. I think that one of the reasons that the NHL can not or will not remove the violence is that there are not enough players today that have the skill to play good hockey.
