I'm not sure it's love that makes sex great as opposed to just good. I think it's about a mental connection and about trust. Both these things are pretty much always present in love, but they can be found outside of that realm too.

I agree that quality of sex can have nothing to do with an emotional attachment, lust being the fuel that fans the flames but a sexual relationship with someone you care for/love/trust can be a long, slow, smouldering, fire. Problem is that without proper stoking, the coals won't stay hot and you'll be left with a pile of sexually frustrated ashes.
