Again, no fruit cake this year. :) I happen to be someone that like a good fruit cake. I don't know if all the jokes over the years helped kill the market or that while they were a staple of the holiday, the fact that they were "not perishable" in the same sense as most food item led to ridicules storage time or what? While I spent little time in the stores after Thanksgiving, I couldn't find them anywhere.
So what item of old tradition for the holidays do you miss or what didn't you get that you looked forward to this year?

I got a panetone which is sort of fruitcake-ish and I made french toast with it.
I miss getting a lifesaver storybook.

Wow...it's been YEARS since I opened a Lifesaver story book. What a great memory.
Every year we celebrated with my grandparents, we went to church on Christmas Eve. When we got back to the house, my grandmother would insist the children "just open one present". My father used to get so bent out of shape and she would push on in a way that only a grandparent could. Three hours later...everything was unwrapped and it was after midnight, so she would say "see...it's Christmas...I told you it was ok"
As for gifts, this is the first year ever that I didn't get underwear and socks. Ever!
The easiest and the best....I have made this for over thirty years.
Prep Time: 15 minutes plus baking and chilling time
Preheat To: 300ºF (150ºC)
Serving: 8-10 portions, each cake
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups (625 mL) all purpose flour
1 tsp (5 mL) baking soda
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 jar (750 mL) mincemeat
1 can (300 mL) Regular or Low Fat Eagle Brand® sweetened condensed milk
2 cups (500 mL) chopped mixed glacé fruit
1 cup (250 mL) chopped walnuts
Whole glacé cherries
Preparation:
1. Stir together flour and baking soda; set aside.
2. Combine eggs, mincemeat, Eagle Brand, chopped fruit and nuts. Add dry ingredients; mix well.
3. Divide batter between two greased 9 x 5" (1.5 L) loaf pans.
4. Bake in preheated 300ºF (150ºC) oven for 1 hour and 20-25 minutes or until done. Cool 15 minutes.
5. Turn out pans; cool completely. Garnish with glacé cherries or marzipan frostings.
It is just as good any I have had and the secret is the mincemeat(no meat in it at all)
I will send you one for next Christmas!!! There it is in writing....just have to get it notorized. ;)

It's a generational thing, my kids just aren't interested in fruitcake. All the more for Marian and I.

I actually made the comment to my husband that I miss getting a fruitcake...I guess it's because of my dad being gone...it was his favorite this time of year.

PF, you asked about holiday traditions we miss. I know it's a lot because of where I live now, but as a kid in Minnesota, I loved sleigh rides around this time of year. Haven't seen or heard much about them for a very, very long time. Might still be popular, but not so much around here (not enough snow often enough). :(

We have a few farms that still do them. This one (http://www.allegrafarm.com/sleigh-rides.html) has had some of their equipment featured in a variety of movies as well. Not a bad price for a priceless experience, imho.

Note to self, Christmas 2014 at BIBI's place.
My boss makes the best ever fruitcake. The fruit is so rum soaked by the time she gets done that they burst in your mouth with liquor, sweet goodness. PF, you can come over next year and I will share a slice with you. :x:
I love Lifesavor storybooks. That and a new box of checkers were always under our tree when I was a kid.

It takes a person of remarkable fortitude to bolster a fruitcake with Vegemite. Bundy perhaps, but rarely Vegie.

I already have a 'spare' jar. So far I've spared all up-over life forms for at least 5 years. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sick006.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)
