WITHOUT looking at a map, please answer.

If I am standing in Detroit and proceed due south, which foreign country do I first encounter?

Wouldn't that be Canada?

Depends on which map you are using.

The one with "X marks the spot" is likely to be the least reliable.

If it is you, the United States :p

Well picked, Lil, but sadly I've abandoned the Yankee shore for the Golden Sands of Oz.

I'll go with that and add that it'll be the same with a 'forward march' or 'to the rear march'.

We won't even begin to canvass the most easterly part of the US.

Windsor, Canada. Ford used to build V8's there (& may still for all I know)...

While we're the topic, anyone with an interest in the quirks of US geography may want to check out How the States Got Their Shapes (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0061431389/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00) I think it would have been a better read if the states were listed in chronological rather than alphabetical order, but still worth the effort.
