As some of you know from years past (http://www.pixies-place.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32258) , I enjoy preparing and wrapping a gift almost as much as giving it. :D Misleading packaging can add to it being a surprise. Here is one of this years efforts.

We have a 3# item (not to be disclosed before Christmas) that could fit into a cigar box. When set into a slightly over size box and stuffed snuggly with bubble-wrap, it's ready for the additional packing to put it into a much over sized box with enough packing to keep it centered and balanced but allows it to shift around slightly. ;)

Now wrap a wine bottle up in a large plastic bag that give it at least a 4 layer thick covering. With a small tack hammer, 'disassemble' the bottle. Put these peaces in a small box that will be wrapped and taped on all sides and marked "DO NOT OPEN".

Seal everything in the large box and be certain the person handing out the gifts knows to shake it just a little to "discover" the tinkle of broken glass. Then after a sound shaking, hand it to the person with a sad face while saying :( "awwwww".

Put the completed assembly into a stout shipping carton complete with address label if available and wrap in gift paper. Just to add a tiny bit of confusion, turn it on end and stick on the gift tag to suggest upright orientation.

This one happens to be a bit of a high ticket item and will be completely unexpected. Most of the family went together on this and it will be the single primary gift, so everyone can enjoy the surprise opening.

That little extra effort can make gift wrapping so much more fun. :D

A sealed box with a small bag of lead shot, 8 ounces maybe, and an MP3 player with a looping recording of a kitten. Make the box VERY hard to open. The gift is a gift voucher taped into the box.

I LOVE it!
Another great mind at work and ours too. ;)

Now I have to re-wrap a couple gift certificates.

Oh, one of my favorites is the oposite: other than the containing box, which of course, should be wrapped in pretty paper, $20 of pennies: unwrapped.

Well yeah, I ment he likes to rattle his presents before he opens them. :)

I'm still dazzled with the mental pictures, lizz.

Gallons of bean-bag styrofoam beads, whether they're needed or not.

I love these ideas. Wish I'd stopped here before Christmas. Rats! Gotta remember this for next year.

Just an idea, but you could tape some weights to the inside of the box. Making sure that each side is weighted different so the box is heavily lopsided.

I have to say that the big box filled with styrofoam packing peanuts, a box with a broken cup in it, a smaller empty box with a note taped in it and a clue, a gift bag with some old door knobs for weight, and a very small wrapped box with a note saying "These aren't the gifts you are looking for" all equaling a box full of nothing was a hit! Mayhem had fun opening it, digging through, being horrified he "broke" his gift and the laughter of realizing he had a box full of junk. I neatly wrapped his real gift and stashed it away until he had waded through the fake present. He loved it all and happily likes his real gift.

this was fun PF, thank you for the idea!!!!

ps. Mayhem is reading over my shoulder as I type and is chuckling the "ah Ha" kind of chuckle....oops, sorry PF, you may get a stern....

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!

My son recieved 4 new Nintendo DS games from his Aunt & Uncle for Christmas...taped to the insides of the flaps of an empty box (about the size of a large shoe box)...no weights...and the outer box was wrapped up. He thought he'd gotten an empty box. He's 8--so we found his reaction WAY more amusing than he did!
