Last Friday, I went out with an ex-girlfriend of mine to get pictures of the Potomac River & C&O Canal at flood stage. (Oh, these are too large for actuall attachments, so I'll post links to the pics on Photobucket.) The results:
The canal, with one of the locks closed:

And a (closed) observation deck, with the waters nearly up to the edge:

And in the calmer waters of the canal, some ducks:

And further down the canal:

Somewhat upriver, at a narrows point:

Further downstream, with high water:

The bridge to one of the observation islands in the narrows was closed, and here's why:

But further downstream, the river widens into a gorge:

And then at sunset, I got a cloudscape pic or two:

Oh, sorry, no topless pics of the ex-girlfriend. I mean, I tried to talk her into it, but...

185 miles is more than a great hike.

185 miles is more than a great hike.
The Scout troup I mentor has done the C&O twice during my tenure, and my daughter cycled it with her Girl Scout Troop a few years ago.

Taking nothing away from those who prefer to enjoy it in other ways, the C&O is indeed a great hike. :)

http://www.nps.gov/choh/historyculture/places.htm The C&O canal was built in teh 1800's: "most" of the equipment is original, although I cna't tell offhand if that particular lock set is.
