I'm thinking of giving up my gym membership and getting the Wii Fit and other groovy dancing games. My problem is that I don't know jack about the Wii and I don't want to waste my man's good money on something that may or may not give me the kind of workouts I get at the gym. Now, I'm no athlete and my gym time is about an hour split between elliptical and treadmill. I do free weights at home.

What do y'all think? Any advice or experience?

The Wii won't do rowing machine and static bike stuff, nor will it do weights.

It is mainly running, bending and stretching stuff.

It's a good system, but not sure how well those programs do vs. a gym.

Here (http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/12/01/phys-ed-why-wii-fit-is-best-for-grandparents/?src=twt&twt=taraparkerpope) is an article about it in the New York Times. I personally don't have one, so I don't know, but it sounds like it doesn't really compare to actually going to the gym.

My hair dude lost most of his weight (He went from bear to totally ripped stud) by doing the Wii Fit and other Wii exercise stuff. I bought it and have not ever used it.

I have the Wii Fit game. If you really work it, you will sweat, get tired, and be sore later. However, I don't think it will compare to a gym and the equipment you find there. The Wii Fit does have a graph tracking your weight, which is kind of nice. You can set a goal, and a time frame for, and it will give you advice for reaching it. So, it's pretty cool for that aspect as well.

We just bought the xbox kinect....i prefer it over the Wii because you dont need to have all the extras add ons, your body movements control everything...tis way awesome!

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking I'll probably stick with my gym membership. I know that I push myself there and while it's expensive, it's no more expensive then investing in the Wii or some other system. What I really want it for us to get a home where I can turn a spare room into a home gym.

My cousin and I built a heavy bag out of 6 old tires and some chain. Great for punching, kicking, and sword training.
