June 4th is National Doughnut Day
by Eric Burkett |

So where can you get a free doughnut on Friday? Check your local mom-and-pop shops — if you're lucky enough to have any left. You can also get a free doughnut at participating locations of these stores:

Krispy Kreme: All customers receive a free doughnut. No purchase necessary.
Dunkin’ Donuts: Free doughnut with the purchase of a beverage.
LaMar's: All customers receive a free Ray's Original Glazed doughnut. No purchase necessary.
Shipley Do-Nuts: Free glazed doughnut with purchase until noon.

So, select your doughnut and then stop to consider the fried dough’s place in history and culture. National Doughnut Day was supposedly — unlike many gimmicky promotional holidays — founded in 1938 to honor real people, the women who, during World War I, served doughnuts as well as coffee, pie, and solace to American soldiers on the front line in Europe.

At its most simple, the doughnut is an elegant treat, round and sweet and soft with just a slight crispness about the edges, a thoughtful contrast to the tender crumb inside.

I like mine unfrosted, although I’ve been known to indulge in the occasional glazed version, as well. Still, whenever I find myself facing a selection, I never go straight for the plain ones; instead, I linger over the various colors, wondering about their fillings, considering too whether a doughnut with sprinkles might better suit my needs than, say, a chocolate frosted one. There is a great deal to consider but, ultimately, usually, the plain ones finally pull me in and I make my choice, reveling in anticipation of that first bite.

Other people are far more passionate about doughnuts than I, however, going so far as to produce poetry and art dedicated to what is, essentially, nothing more than a lump of fat-fried dough. There are Web sites and histories, as well, and of course the doughnut — or “donut” for those who haven‘t time for that additional vowel and consonants — has crept into popular song, too.
