A non-Fiction book called SHIP. It's put out by the Smithsonian and covers the history of ships from ancient times until the present. Very interesting. Talks about the types of ships; construction innovations; how the ships were used; and other details that are quite interesting.

I think this book is out of print now, (2001 (c) ) so you may have to hunt Ebay etc. to find a good used copy, like I did. Lots of funny & sometimes tragic stories, & maybe the biggest surprise is that Eric still remembers any of them

The reason I don't often post what novels I read is because I read through novels pretty quickly, and I don't always see them as the most interesting thing I am reading at the moment (as I always have several books on the go at once).
Right now the most interesting book I am reading is Jewels: A Secret History (http://www.amazon.com/Jewels-Secret-History-Victoria-Finlay/dp/0345466942) by Victoria Finlay.

Now I prob look like a real egghead, just finished (sort of) "The Panic of 1907". I really wish I'd read it 2 yrs ago when it came out, but it took this long to get down to my price range; now it just seems depressingly predictive, in that it shows that we were primed for a repeat of history 100 yrs later, & yet we couldn't do anything to stop ourselves from doing the lemming thing again. Best quote: "History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes." - Mark Twain

"Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity (http://www.physics.nyu.edu/faculty/sokal/transgress_v2/transgress_v2_singlefile.html)"
I know that sounds like pure BS, and it was! This article was a hoax perpetrated by Alan Sokal, published in Social Text (http://socialtext.dukejournals.org/) at the height of the Science Wars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_wars).
In it, by presenting carefully worded nonsense, Dr. Sokal illustrated the lack of intellectual rigor practiced by postmodernist critics who had little understanding of the science they criticized.
