Some times it's not fun trying to be Pixie Village Idiot and at the top of a lot of notification lists too. :banghead:

:hair:1
My last chat with TeddyBear had her still in the hospital on a drip while trying to recover from another MAJOR surgery. She was improving along a trail too often traveled and in good spirits (as only this loooooong suffering lady is capable of) and hoping to return home within the next few days.

:hair:2
I was tensely waiting for a call from a hospital and got one, but from a different hospital in Peoria Illinois. Our DicksBro wants you to know he was hospitalized this afternoon with a "dangerously low blood count" after a scheduled exam. Word is he will be under observation while they explore for the cause and will not be posting until further notice.

:hair:3
We sometimes get something we don't want, .................. like a call from the people your son works for. I got one this afternoon and wasn't happy to be talking to the police department. You can read as much as I can here (http://www.fox8.com/wjw-officer-injured-20421,0,7385662.story). The last message was that he was taken to a hospital with a Level 1 Trauma Center and is in surgery with broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and a punctured diaphragm.

It's going to be a long night. :rolleyes2

I hope dicksbro's problem is found and fixed very soon. Please pass on my best wishes to him, he is in my thoughts.

The call about your son is one that every parent dreads. I will keep him (and you) in my thoughts and hope that he makes a full and speedy recovery.

Erok was not with him.

Last update I have is my son now out of surgery and in ICU on a respirator for tonight. The punctured diaphragm was repaired and the broken ribs repositioned to allow the collapsed lung to recover. He has a lacerated spleen and kidney, broken tailbone and hip. They said his spine and brain show no signs of injury. He is in serious but stable condition. I don't expect (nor hope for) any further change or update until mid morning when they have evaluated and come back with a report.

My son has been taken off the respirator and is breathing on his own with some difficulty and a lot of pain but he seems to have passed the life threatening points. He is still considered 'serious but stable' and they hope to move him to a 'step down unit' by tomorrow. Just breathing is a task so talking is not a consideration right now. He shows the stress when writing a couple short notes for the medical people so isn't up to conversation.

There is going to be a LOT of healing and we'll see when and where that takes us. For now I'm just one VERY grateful father that I still have my son.

It's been a very long 23 hours.

i second the "enough already". i've been getting more than the usual run of bad news about friends and family over the last few weeks, too. and worse bad news than the usual run of just plain bad news. and many of the people i know have been told worse than usual news in recent weeks. it's almost weird, like there's been a shift. sounds like a King plot but still, i wonder if the turtle moved or something. sometimes it seems like even the law of averages is out to get you and yours.

Teddy is home and doing well from both the leg infection and the prior brain surgery. We are all happy to hear they smashed the infection ..........(again)......... in quick order this time. Now they are looking for a good electrician to make the connections now that she has everything packed in and the zippers are staying shut.

DB also called to ask about my son and said he expects to be going for some out-patient surgery in the next few weeks. He expects to be home in the next couple days and will post detail then.

The news for my son is coming slow now (or seems to be that way) as everything is "stable". They are considering possibly moving him from IC to a step-down unit if all conditions continue to improve as expected. He's a cop with more drugs in him than the junkies he normally deals with but not enjoying it at all. The sore and pain are very real and are going to be for a while at the least. I will find out tomorrow when the next key evaluation or tests or whatever are going to be done on the various injuries.

It doesn't seem like this has only been two days. :wobbly:

Just got home from the hospital. In the course of doing the tests, what they found was a tumor on my colan. Good news is that there are stong indications that it's a recent development and probably hasn't spread. I'll see my surgeon on this coming Wednesday and will probably be back in surgery in the next week or two. Thank God they at least found what the problem was. It was only by chance that I let my cardiologist know about my shortness of breath causing the tests to be done in the first place.

Any good thoughts are appreciated and Mrs. and I are still planning on PAGAN 09 and a nephew's wedding this weekend in Chicago. We're in good spirits and very optimistic.

You have my sympathies...coupla yrs back, I had just a few moments when I believed my son's life might be in the balance, turned out to be nothing more than an anxiety attack...but that relief did not mitigate the grey hairs I acquired in the interim, & the few minutes of doubt felt like hours, & prob took as much off of my lifespan. Hang in there, the highly imperfect human body is never so miraculous as when it pulls itself back together after a disaster.

PantyFanatic
04-25-2009, 03:51 AM
Thank you Scotz, and all the good wishes from Aqua to Zoid. Times like these are when Pixies provides a place to sort your thoughts. There has been a time warp without a doubt and my son's gravity is what bent time. The past three days that has been a month at least, has actually been full of miracles. The blunt reminder of how fragile we really are has also demonstrated our ability to survive, salvage and repair. Still the model for every innovation we think we are developing. Early this morning he was moved to the step-down unit, his cathedra was taken out and by this afternoon therapy showed up and had him move to the edge of the bed and get upright on one leg, and back down. This was astonishing after sitting up was impossible 36 hours earlier. He is able to talk (softly) and hold a thought outside of himself and the pain.

A lesson for myself has been that their are things we just can not prepare for. I am aware of the profession he is in but that's not enough even after you tell yourself you have considered the reality. I found this similar to the passing of my mother a year and a half ago. It was a very natural and understood matter for a failing 87 year old woman and you know you are going to get that call someday. When it comes you will be sad but ready.

You are never ready!

PantyFanatic
04-25-2009, 05:24 AM
Even though my schedule is mine right now, sleep seems to have it's own schedule as well. I've been able to reflect on a wide range of things and one is how some things actually work. Throughout this ordeal I have been impressed with the quick and correct preparation and response from the groups in the profession.

I know it's part of their business, but a hour and a half after the first report, a representative from the FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) was at the house with an envelope for expenses, telling the family to get down to Columbus. Before the two hours it took to get there, they had two motel rooms logistically to the hospital, set up and paid for the next three nights.

Erok is going to be totally confused for a while. My son belongs to a K9 group from different area units that meets every two weeks and work out the dogs with different scenarios to keep them all at peek on things they don't get to do every day on the job but have to be ready with. Before the family could get ready to leave, a member of the group was there to take Erok that night, and a different handler (so he doesn't get accustomed to any one person) will feed and 'walk' and 'play' with him every day.

The moral support from every aspect of the local first responders is overwhelming. In this case there were two 'local' areas. Men from his department were down to Columbus and stood watch while he was in surgery. Next day, a number of the Columbus Departments, including the Fire and EMS that had been on the scene visited.

It's refreshing to see part of a bureaucracy do what's needed in a timely manner. Perhaps it's because it is set up and executed from the bottom up rather than the top down, but it woks. I guess it comes with the profession but I better understand the 'brotherhood' aspect. It's like the shared experience with an 'Army buddy'.

As you might guess, I've been preoccupied for a few days to where I actually had to stop and figure out what day of the week it was yesterday, and a few hours later had to do it again. I again thank everyone for the thoughts and prayers. I've talked to so many people and time is playing tricks. Sequence of events and 'progress' is the only indelible marks being made on me right now. I had to go back and read this thread to see where we were. This was too close, ..... at least for MY son.

I'm pleased that in spit of the depth, we think we have found the bottom and it's up hill from here. I came back to Cleveland Saturday night and slept for twice the time that is actually my normal nights rest, so I must feel things are under control. He was moved to a regular room today and taken off the oxygen. I understand they had to put him back on for a while and he will sleep with it, but they are very pleased overall.

He will show the zipper they gave him but says the chest drain is his biggest discomfort. He is still on a lot of pain suppressers and will nod off in the middle of a sentence......... then come right back in a couple minutes. Now that the weekend is over he should get some of the rest he needs. That seems to be what is most needed now. :wish:

Talked to my surgeon today. Plans are for surgery to happen on the 14th. At this point, the surgeon believes the surgery can be done laparoscopically which would speed recovery. Obviously, if the surgery requires, the opening can be enlarged and the surgery performed in the traditional manner. Looks like surgery will remove the cancerous colon section and about twelve surrounding lymph nodes. The nodes filter the blood and while showing no sign of cancer, need to be checked to help assure that the cancer has not spread. In any case, I specifically asked if our planned July getaway to Holland, MI should be canceled. Answer was certainly not yet. If the surgery is successful and no spread to the disease has been found, I should be more than healed in time for the vacation. :) Likely will be a four or five week recovery period although I should be back on my feet sooner than that. Again, if nothing unexpected is found, there may be (Lord willing) no need for chemo.

I thought the meeting with the surgeon was very good and I've great reason to feel optimistic. Actually, I already felt pretty confident and the surgeon did nothing to discourage me.

I'm thrilled to say he came home Friday and doing fantastic (considering :rolleyes2 ) on the healing trail. He will be laid up for at least 4-6 months with the hips they tell him. The important internal injuries have had all that can be done, done, and the monitoring and therapy has been above acceptable. They want him to return to THEIR facility in Columbus for a final check-up in three weeks but his orthopedic therapy will be local.

Erok came home on Saturday and there was no doubt he was pleased to be get there. It is the only place where he is not in a kennel of some type or working with a handler, so 'home' is where he can be a dog and you can tell he is happy to be there. :)

We are all happy that the occupants of the other vehicle was treated and released the same day. :wish:

...... But like anything the media covers, a few facts get missed or distorted. It was not a woman and her one year old daughter. It was a man, ... with a two year old boy. He was not making a turn with the car. Then dogs name is not Nick, it's Erok, and so on. The bottom line is no one else was seriously hurt and the only death was the cruiser.

What I said about Erok being happy to be back to his first real home was not a miss-statement. He has always done his job well of not being far from his master but now he tries to be literally next to him all the time. When ANYONE visits, he wants to be 'between' them and No.1 son, even the immediate family. Not in a threatening way, but nobody else is going to sit next to him. He use to be content to just lay in the same room but now he will be next to him. He definitely knows something happen and WILL stay close to him. LOL

The car was brought up to Cleveland this last week so No.1 son was loaded up to have a look yesterday. I could tell it registered more than I had anticipated. After thinking about it, what did he have to reference anything to. It was a split second flash.... he wakes up hurting a LOT and hadn't even seen the news photos. A father knows that look of stun when the sight of the cruiser struck him and that pause. :yikes: He "wouldn't bet anybody made it out of that".

I took some pics and looking at the straight-ahead and parallel wheel alignment, the distortion and displacement of the part in between is obvious.

About a week ago Teddy confessed that she just could not stay away from her friends in the hospital. She was back in with infections in the other leg, but she only wanted to check up that they were doing things right and was out in a couple days. I keep trying to convince her that she can just stay at home and we'll call from Pixies to see if they are on their toes or that I would even go and 'inspect' the nurses myself, just for her.

More Than Enough

I would like to end this thread while everyone is on an up note for a quick minute. DB is back with us and the modification is working fine, TeddyBear's upgrade is getting the voltage regular fine tuned and No.1 son is smiling at being on the mend.

I know after seeing the car, a dawning and pause has permanently adjusted his prospective of many things. The way 'experience' registers and changes the value of already known 'facts' is not logical but a very human thing. I have been proud of the job he does and taking some comfort after he added the dog. Seeing a clean cop really doing a hard job, by the book, does make a parent proud, but knowing there is an element of danger causes reserve. In the back of my mind I felt the odds had improved with having this special tool of protection. Then the fact of an auto accident, which all of us are exposed to, could come so close to killing him caused me pause. This happened while on duty but truly was not related to the job he does, away from the additional hours on the road.

After getting WAY to close to the edge exactly 4 weeks ago yesterday, it is hard to believe that much time has passed and that everyone on this thread is in such a better state. These are brutal reminders of how fragile and susceptible we are but also how resilient we can be with the understanding and application of a little science.

He has read a printout of this thread and wants to thank everybody for the good thoughts and prayers.

Today is an exceptionally wonderful one because there is NOTHING extraordinary about it. :line: A year ago when my son's life was a question WAS an extraordinary day that we are hoping to never repeat. For him to tell me he feels as good today as he has ever felt, is something that was VERY much in doubt a year ago tonight. To say this last Thanksgiving held a special meaning for this family is an understatement. It has bee a life changing year for him in ways other than what this accident produced as well, so his comments of "… rebuilding my life with clearer goal and better direction.." is more than any of us expected to hear on this not so pleasant anniversary. YAA for us.

Now, if we could just live to see peace in the world ... ahhhhh ... sounds good, doesn't it? :)
