One of the messages from this week is the call to give of yourself to those in need.

How do you give of yourself? Fucking sailors on shore leave counts. This is Pixies afterall ;)

When I lived in Des Moines, I would serve Thanksgiving and Christmas meals at the homeless shelter. One of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had.

Not a whole lot of volunteer opportunities here in small town Iowa but I have delivered the Senior Dinners a few times since I moved back here and I used to check on my neighbor Frieda everyday..... that's not really volunteering but it sure made me feel good to do it.

There is a lady in a town about 7 mi. from here who spays and neuters cats at a very discounted cost ($20) to try and help keep the stray population down and I'm going to see if she'd let me come down and help take care of the kittehs she's got there at her shelter. Wouldn't be a heck of a lot different than spending the time here at home with my flock.

I am sure she could use the help. Donate your time in honor of Frieda!

A form of volunteerism maybe, I offer living history lessons to schools free of charge.
Have been known to make things to donate to benefit auctions,or make cemetery
crosses for those that can't afford the cost of a funeral and headstone.

Do grocery shopping for elderly shutins who can't get out. Also volunteer working with people who recently had open heart surgery by helping them with their cardiac rehab programs and diet adjustments.

Aqua- you inspire kids- Go YOU!

jay-t I wish I would have known about the crosses. I know someone who has no headstone and it causes me such grief. What a way to give.

IM1469- helping people get adjusted to a new way of life is awesome.

Several ways. Help with a soup kitchen in Peoria; collect clothing, furniture, school and church donations for Appalachia and several countries in Africa and South America and help load the trucks to get the goods shipped; sponsor a young girl in Mexico; and, I visit shut-ins from our church. Also do a lot of work up at our church during the week and at our Sunday services.

Sometimes think I work harder now than before I retired ... it's just all things I truly enjoy doing.

Hmmmm...servicing some of our servicewomen after a long tour or duty seems VERY patriotic!!!

Just returned from the weekly Troop meeting. I've been dragooned into the December 14, 15, 16 Winter Camping.

About the same as my previous post. Just visited five shut-in's last Friday and another one yesterday. Today, we may try to run up to one of the hospitals in Peoria to visit a friend that had quadruple bypass surgery done about a week ago.

Why not? It beats being mis-quoted.
