Now that I have your attention I thought I would let you all know what the australian government has decided to do in regards to policing web service.
Our main internet provider is telstra who started off as telecom, before they got their hands on internet they were just a phone company....still are.
Their division of ISP is called bigpond. (www.bigpond.com) Now our idiots over in Canberra have decided to invade our privacy of our own internet access by having monitoring systems in place. Basically as soon as you look at a porn site it blocks you. They haven't put it in place as yet as there will be plenty of protest against it. I believe the main reason for this "dragnet" of sorts is due to the high level of child porn wankers that we have here.
The most recent being some police officers who are meant to be protecting people from these sort of monsters, and also we have had quite a few priests hiding in the "closet" as well who have also been caught.
The worst thing is, the software that they are going to use does not distinguish between porn, "naked art" and I dare say even this site, with it's moderate level of adult material. But I think this site will be safe for us aussies as it is foremost a forum so the only way to look up the adult stuff is to be a member. Oh the perks of membership....gotta love it.
The only way they could use this software is have it within the ISP main server.
Now if the house of reps decide to pass the bill, then the aussie network of net users will drop quite quickly. The other issue of course is doctor's and those in the medical field who need to use naked pictures for reference etc would also be denied access for their med exams and the like.
The coming months will interesting to say the least.

They'll probably have to watch each site,to distinguish if it is Porn or not.
Then after they wipe off thier pants, they will make a dicision(sp?)Mind you,
this is only to protect you!(sic) :irish: Irish

From an objective point of view there are good points about this. As you mentioned it's an effort to catch the bad guys. They're just trying to catch the laws and regulations up with the technology. The idea behind the action is decent. The plan of execution has quite a few kinks (and I don't mean the fun ones). This might be the right time to try coming up with a better plan and submitting it to your government. I don't know how that would work over there, but for me I would write a letter to my congressman with another idea. You might try them using stronger parental controls to keep the underage thing in control. I'm not sure what you can do for the adults. The best parental controls I tried to get through was MSN. I couldn't do it. AOL was a sinch.

Well LS, our equal to a congressman is an MP (minister of parlament). IE7 has parental blocks in place, the thing with that though is to make sure your kids don't change the settings back is to make them a limited user via the user accounts in control panel.
Once your kids turn 18 you simply change it back.
I understand why they want to do it, and part of me agrees with it, however as I mentioned it won't distinguish between one from the other, unless of course they look at the library of urls in our internet browsers and deem what they think is "child porn, porn" or just "naked pics" for medicinal reasons or as "art".
The funny thing is child porn websites don't actually exist for the obvious reasons as it is against the law and anyone who has a website that contains child porn is arrested and sent to jail.
So what are they really policing? I just think the gov'ment wants to show how imcompetent they are by wasting tax payers money on something that is not really needed. They do it all the time here. We have real idiots working here and what's more is we put them there. So what does that say about us?

We will see if this goes ahead or not, i have my doubts, even ISP's are saying this is not practical and refuse to trial it. To have every person censored it would slow the net down. We are already quite a ways behind other in this department, we need to be speeding it up and dropping cost, not the other way around.
If the seriously think this will stop the determined sicko bastards, the are mistaken, if they cant get it through the internet, they WILL find others ways or get around the filter someone, that is a given thing.
And again it will be the decent porn people who will be penalised because of the sickos!!
There will be an uproar if they put this in place, of that i am sure!

America is the BEST!!!
I will put our idiots up against yours anytime and win every time.
How many bureaucrats does it to take to change a light bulb?
Two.
One to assure that they have taken charge and everything is under control with all their power and resources being brought into action while the other one screws the bulb into the faucet. :wobbly:

Every government has their idiots. I agree that the people who aren't sickos would be penalized and those that are would just find another way to get it. I saw in a movie a company specifically designed to search for porn and block out the bad sites for parental controls. They could do that and instead of searching for porn in general to block make it where they block what they legally define as "child porn". I would also like to reiterate, you could always come up with a better plan and send it to your minister of parliament. Complaining is fine, but not coming up with another solution doesn't help.

Complaining makes me feel better, i'm entitled to do it so i will.
I have another solution but i'm darn sure they wont like it, when they catch em shoot em, not let em back out to do it again!!

Well why do you think they have the 2 mug shots? One is from the front and the other from the side showing them leaving.....They had them right there and let them go.

Orli, I hate to say this but even disgusting perverted sickos should get a fair trial. After the fair trial if they are convicted, then you can fry the guy. I also agree that complaining does make you feel better (I know it does me), but it still doesn't solve the problem.

They get a trial here, i was not suggesting otherwise, but then they let the bastards go (after a wee stint in prison generally)...wtf is with that! Then the fuckers go do it again.
If i wanna complain i bloodywell will. Again i gave my solution, if they dont want it, then they can damnwell listen to me complain about it!
I also didnt vote the morons in that we currently have, so yes that gives me the right to complain about the stupid shit the government is doing.
If ya have an issue with my complaining, which it appears you do..too bad so sad. Go tell someone who cares

This could work out good for you Sharni. It may give you something to start working on between net allocations periods.;) If you and Mark really have an issue with government actions and are serious about making a concerted effort to do more than bitch, you may want to begin finding others and setting plans. You know it will be like shoveling shit against the tide to really have an accounting to the people for deeds done by any power structure anywhere, but it does happen even to the most powerful and abusive institutions. Go ahead and google "China, gang of four" to see a bit you wouldn't have expected. I've been told that sincere belief and action had a lot to do with my country coming into existence and many others as well. This could be a chance for you to steer thing back in a direction you believe in. :thumb:

You know I have my family, my work, Pixies and now a project away from Pixies that pretty much makes up my life at this point. I have seven days before the beginning of a long term effort that is very separate from the other important points of my life and has odds of minimal success for me, but it gives a little purpose and something to actively work for with my life's convictions that were defended, spent believing in and maybe wasted on. I can contribute a little financially, bring an accumulation of extreme experience and satisfaction that I'm giving it it's deserve. We all have to be somewhere and have something to do. ;)

Who said i havent done a bit towards trying to stop the censorship, which i have actually. So now i take my right to bitch about it!!
Fuck now i feel the need to complain about the fact i'm apparently not permitted to vent/complain/just plain bitch!!!

OrliF COMPLAIN ALL YOUR LIKE!!
it's a FREE country go ahead Hun.. the fact that no one gives a dam about us little folk is another story.
I have to say from Gov experience (don’t ask i wont tell) all i can say IS that this is all a waste of MONEY and time.. it's trying to make more problems by monitoring then actually dealing with the problem... similar to the law if a robber breaks into your house and you whack the prick on the head.. he can charge you... WTF!!!
really all they are is making up excuses.. BUT i think by now the world knows that the Big Brothers (so to speak) ARE WATCHING!!!
Oh i forgot to add.. i would bring back the eye for eye method.. if they are caught being a pedoF then cut their eyeballs out and then lets see what they will do with themselves... :fart:

I know alot of single a coupled people who love to watch porn there right will be taken away my partner on the odd occasion likes to watch it.. I have no issues with people watching for 'recreational use ' but where is the government going to stop that fine line and find out who is abusing the system? In my opinion the government need to re think this.. Yes it's a great idea but I do see the potential for alot of floors.. What about doctors who need to look up breast cancer or students who are needing some info for sex ed, are thye going to ban all of that also?
Even if they do put this into place.. what is to stop people from still doing it? Why aren't they putting time and money into going to countries where the child porn is happening and stopping it that way.. Banning it from the net will not stop the actions from happening, just because people are not watching it does not mean it's not happening..
I mean what is to stop a pedophile from going to the park and kidnapping a young child nothing!!! The net is only a small thing compared to what's in the outside world..
As Orli said they do get a trial here but it's not a fair trial most of them get there sentance and are out on paroll in the next 3-5yrs why not lock them up for life and make them suffer in there 2x4 cells..

Here in my state those kinds of criminals are usually up for capital punishment, meaning they are up for life in prison. Rarely do they get convicted of that. My last case the guy ended up with 15 years per offense he was charged with. One thing here that happens though is that the guy was declared a sexual predator and with that stipulation he is forbidden to ever buy or possess pornography.
The thing I love about Austrlia is that with everyone voting, as opposed to the usual poll goers in the US, you stand a better chance of seeing that your wishes are carried out.
Good luck!

I never said I have a problem with you complaining. I never said you couldn't complain. I was also unaware of the fact that you have done something besides complain. I'm sorry for any misunderstanding Orli. I was just trying to point out that quite a few people complain about the problem, then do nothing about it but complain. I was also trying to point out that if you felt that strongly about it, you should do something about it. So again, I apologize for any misunderstandings.

It's a law for lazy parents. Once you've given up one little bit of freedom, it becomes easier to give up more - that's the scary part.
This is a ridiculous attempt at totalitarianism.
Here's the link to Senator Conroy. Give him a blast.

Well we never gave up the freedom to begin with. The gov'ment just decided to do it out of the blue. However it needs to pass the bill first. That means they need to vote on it.......

The government has a history of doing things against the wishes of the people in "our long-term best interests". Trouble is that there is a part of one percent of the population that can always be used as a justification.
