View Full Version : The Ark ~ The critter ~ "Pic heavy"
Well the Ark inhabitants have dropped quite a number now :( With all that going on here, quite a few have new homes. Two by Two, out they went :boohoo: :boohoo:
I did a major reshuffle of my photobucket account, so most pic links will be broken in the old threads, so a new thread was the go eh.
Anyway my critters are now:
Dog ~ Scooby Doo
Cat ~ Scamp
Mice ~ MooMoo & Speedy
5ft tropical tank
2ft goldfish tank
3x betta tanks
Then we have the odd critter visitors *L*
I'll slowly start taking snaps again and adding them here for you to see.
Well, let me say, moving the 5ft was a bloody nightmare!
The poor fish were bagged for 1 1/2 days, non heated, while the tank was pulled down, moved and reset up. Thankfully no losses though that i can see!!
The substrate has all mixed in, so it is no longer black, but i dont mind the look actually. The driftwood has also been rearranged differently, again i dont mind that either. The new look has made the fish use the entire tank more, which is great for viewing them.
The bristlenoses, Nosette and Spike, now live in the 5ft. They are doing an excellent job of keeping any new algae under control.
I grabbed a quick snap of the 5ft yesterday.....i'll try for better pics later
The tank is seriously low in plants, the algae bloom prior to the move made me cull a few of the plants out when i replanted. I'll slowly start to replace what was discarded in the weeks to come.

Meet Argon (mostly white) & Eragon (gold), these 2 were in my pond which was demolished in the move. They will stay in here until, i either get the pond redone or they outgrow the tank.
The tank deparately needs a makeover, my tank muse hasnt given me any inclination on the final tank outlook as yet *LOL* It will happen eventually, i am leaning towards the fake colourful tank for the goldies though *LOL*

Tell the truth. You had to move when the mice out numbered you, took over and threw you out.
Glad to see you are getting settled and set back up. Sorry to hear about the pond casualty.
*LOL*@PF
I'm VERY glad to be getting settled!! The pond was not a permanant structure, i just gotta get around to getting it set back up. Scoob is using the liner at present though, so i gotta get a new liner first *L*
Look who came to stay for a few days. I found him in a box and put him in a critter keeper for a few days so my sons could have a look at him (my youngest found out he bites *LOL*)
He has now been released back out into the garden, but i snapped a few pics of him before he left :)
We also had a large blue tongue drop in, but i wasnt catching him to take pics of *LOL*, they definately bite and bite HARD!
Anyway here's liz the skink

They say he is slow and gentle but that one won't fit under my shoe. :yikes:

I was taking some pics of the house to email to Mum & Dad, and well, ole Scoob stole the show *LOL*

OK. You can stay and unpack now. It looks like Scooby approves of the new place. :)
OF ~ *LOL*@gentle lizard. And yep water restrictions, i think they are level 4 out here. Mind you the only lawn is this side of the BBQ, the other side is a nasty bindii type weed, along with just about every other type of weed, which will be getting a drink of poison very shortly. Ya dont go barefoot past the BBQ!!!
IowaMan ~ I love taking pics of doo, he's so photogenic *L*

OrliFanatic~ I was just gifted a huge aquarium. It's 24" wide x 24" tall x 12" deep. That is 61cm x 61cm. I am trying to decide what all I want to put in it. Any suggestions? It's on a big wooden stand with a cabinet below.

Lil, did it come with a heater? If not, goldfish are best in cold water, but if you have a heater, there's a wide wonderful world of tropical fish available, far too many to list here. Once you decide which fish you like, it's important to find a knowledgeable person that can tell you which are compatible, & more importantly, non-compatible...I had to find out the hard way that some of the prettiest, most angelic-looking fish are born fin-nippers :bite: :yikes:
Fangtasia

Heya Lil
24" long (2ft or 61cm)
24" High (2ft or 61cm)
12" wide (1ft or 30.5cm)
That makes it 113.5litre tank or approx 30gal
Coolwater fish
Don't get comet goldfish, the tank would be borderline for 3 fancy ones though.
White cloud minnows in a nice planted tank
Tropical fish ~ heater required
With the height the tank has, 4 Angelfish, 2 bristlenose cats & maybe some nice tetras (not neons, they are small and adult angels will eat them) would look nice, tank planted with Val (will grow tall) and some anubias & java fern on driftwood. Angels prefer soft water (rainwater)
Any of the livebearers, platys, swordtails, mollies, guppies, they make for nice flashy colour, they will breed like rabbits, but they eat their own young, so not many survive to adulthood. These are very hardy type fish.
Some simple easy to care for plants are, Java fern, Anubias, Elodea and Val <---These will survive in low light.
If the tank has some sort of lighting you may be able to get some of the crypts and swords species.

 Orli
Livebearers were always my fav when I was a fishkeeper, at 1st it was Black Mollies, then I got into some very pretty guppies, delta tails & such. Most of the livebearers (or their ancestors) are native to the US east coast, & will thrive in the hard water that's probably in Lil's area. If you want to give the babies a fighting chance, there's floating breeding grass (artificial) that gives them a place to hide...& if you're like me, you'll get a 2nd tank for a nursery ;) Best bet is to find a good pet shop that specializes in fish & such, often there's a guy/gal behind the counter that's a fish nut, just waiting to dispense advice to a newbie. Sometimes such places will accept baby fish in trade for some supplies.

06-28-2008, 09:44 PM
If you can get some Java moss (another very easy plant), the survival rate of fry will be much higher, they can hide in it and the adults cant get to them *L*
Being as where you are Lil it gets warmer, you could get a bath or cheap pond and throw the fry into that to grow out some before being fed to ya turtle. The larger the area they have to grow out in the quicker they will do it.

2ft tank
The goldfish have been rehomed, so now this tank is empty and has become my newest project. Pics will come as it progresses, but at this stage i am still gathering all the goodies for it. This tank will be a plant tank rather than a fish tank *LOL* in other words, mainly plants with a splash of fish just for flashy colour.
So far i have:
The tank (naturally *L*)
Black background sheet (AU$7)
The filter (already owned)
The light (already owned)
The CO2 (given free from lfs to try out)
The plant substrate (AU$30) ~ JBL AquaBasics
To come
Plant tube for light (AU$15)
The driftwood (AU$25, on order) ~ 2 small pieces
Rocks (AU$5 -$10) ~ petrified wood type
Topping gravel (AU$10) ~ colour undecided as yet
Plants (price varies depending on type)
Fish ~ will be a school of small fish, tetras, blue-eyes or such.

The tank is still a bit bare, gotta add some plastic plants, only live plants will be the java fern that is already in there tied to the wood, as axolotls are like bulldozers and like to redecorate *L*
The 5ft tank as it is today.....i removed all the wisteria as it was like a weed and i was tired of having to remove pups every day that were blocking light to other plants. With the wisteria gone, new plants will be added. Dropping into the lfs on Tuesday to see what i can get for it.

The so-called Mexican Walking Fish.
AKA retarded salamanders. With the right hormones, they change into full salamanders.
They're a amphibian Lil....and interesting for sure, you can feed them out of your hand once they get used to you.
Changing them with hormones drastically shortens their lifespan, also is not alway successful. While they can change it is not advisable to try to force them to. Some have been documented doing it naturally, but that is extremely rare.
They stay in this larval form all their lives, and are one of the few that breeds in this form. My kids love em, and me too *L*. They are just so different to the norm.

It's pronounced "banned in the Northern Territory". If those little suckers got loose in tropical waterways, it'd give the cane toads something else to eat.
They prefer cold/cool water. If the water gets to warm they tend to get ill, Not really a tropical critter at all, so i dont understand the NT reasoning there

Pretty. I love the plants. I have tried to take pics of my tank now that I have it all set up and have some fishies. I've started off with plastic plants because I'm growing my real ones from bulbs. So far we have 4 different types of plants growing. I have 4 very bright African Cichlids (http://www.aquarticles.com/images/Fish%20Stores%20Canada/Kevins/Kevins%20Aquatic/p-12%20Cichlids.jpg) 1 blue, 1 orange and 2 yellow. I also have 2 red finned sharks (http://badmanstropicalfish.com/barb-pictures/red_finned_shark.jpg). We've had it set up about 3 weeks now and all are doing well. I'm really enjoying having such a large tank.
Definately need pics Lil...sounds great! I'd like to get other types of cichlids one day, but most others, other than the Angels or Rams, are not real heavily planted friendly *L* I'd also need a larger tank, not sure Bilbo would let me have it *L*...i think he believes 10 tanks is enough *LOL*
Planted tanks are just awesome, like a bit of nature in your house
Just watch your red-finned sharks, they tend to be intolerant of their own kind, especially as the reach maturity. I had 3 of them, 1 was bullied to death and the other i rescued and rehomed before the big guy knocked him off. I was so upset too, the 3 of them looked stunning in the tank.
2ft tank updates
This tank has had a major plant reshuffle and haircut! The plants had taken over practically all the space, the were crammed against the front glass *L* I want to put fish in it so the need somewhere to swim, so maintenance was required.
I forgot to get some of it just before the prune, the one below was taken of the 14th
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i124/Alasse_au/2ft%20fish%20tank/2ft14thSept08a.jpg
Not a jungle in the above pic really, but take my word for it, it was absolutely feral yesterday when i finally got a chance to fix it up!
Anyway, all the wisteria was removed as it was just taking over everything, some plants were trimmed and the trimmed parts replanted, runners were cut and replanted elsewhere, large sword moed from one side to the other, wood changed slightly.
New plants will be added over the coming weeks, but this is it today

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i124/Alasse_au/2ft%20fish%20tank/2ft28thSept08d.jpg

Scored a free 3ft x 18" x14" tank today, dont know if its watertight as yet though, will check that once i get some foam and work out where the fork i'm gonna put it. I may sell it on yet, dunno really.
I may have some more VERY VERY exciting news for the Ark tomorrow!!!!!
Well it took a bit longer than i thought for the VERY VERY exciting news *LOL*
BUT :D:D:D
OMG...i'm now sooooo excited.
My girl will be here sometime next week, she is not named as yet, it has to begin with an A, as she is from 'A' litter. The breeder and myself will come up with something i'm sure *L*

I didn't know that when you registered a dog they told you the letter the name had to begin with. Interesting.
I love "Nika." Neat name for a very precious dog.

The registering body doesn't hun. The Breeder stipulated an A name as this is her "A" Litter (first litter) All the pups will have registered A names. It helps with keeping track of whos who.
The registered name is only allowed to be 24 characters.
With the breeders prefix being 10 letters
then the part of the title that the other 'A' pups have
With all the above it left 4 letters to add her title. The name i wanted wouldn't fit!
The breeder was good enough to allow me to choose the name i wanted...so in short
Nika will be slightly different to the other A littemates,,,,in that she will have the Prefix and then her name, not middle that allthe others have
Make sense now lol

Got the same word from our vet about Riley, who packed on about 10 lbs. since last year.
Wish my two dogs could interact as well as yours. Grumpy old dog Lucky just goes, "Grrrrr-ruffruff!" which generally means, "Get outta my face!" or "Quit sniffing my butt!" :argue:
The only time Scoob lifts his lips at her and snarls is when food is involved, hence they are supervised at din time, and if she grabs his tug toy (she safe while i'm watching though 'cause he knows i'll grumble at him if he does it *L*)

A rescue story
Friday 17th Oct
I bought home a female axolotl from work (it lives there).
I've been watching it for a while, well Thursday night i HAD to say something to them, i just couldn't stand seeing this poor thing suffering anymore. It is really quite ill and i dont think i've ever seen an axolotl this thin. They are ignorant owners, not abusive as such, so they let me bring her home while i try to get her back to health, and while a new suitable tank is being set up. I must give them credit that they are very willing to change the axolotls habitat and care so i'm pleased with that.
So fingers crossed for the female, 'cause honestly, this axolotl is in doubt if she will survive

Nika and the Vet
Wanna tell ya a quick story *LOL* and a true one at that (Happened 22nd Nov 08)
Nika got her 3rd vacc needle today.
We got to the vet and no way in hell was she going in that door *LOL* Had the poochie brakes happening big time, complete will the hackles pointing to the sky!.
Anyway i dragged her furry bum through the door at which time the hackles went down and she got the 'i'm watchin' ya all and if ya move i just might eatz ya' look. That settled shortly after to ok this aint so bad, but DONT look at me!
First was to the scales, 21.4kg she came in at, once we got past the howls barks and generl sooks *LMAO*
Then we go sit in the waiting room, right beside a crate of kelpie pups, who Nika proceeded to whinge to.
Vet calls us in, ok she follow nicely *L*. Close the door, and the vet calls her, oh no, i aint going near him he's scary. Liver treats. Ok he's not so scary *L* More liver treats, hmmm you're not so bad then, but i'm watching ya!
Nika got a general check up, healthy as a horse. The vet looks at her paws and say' she's gonna be one very large GSD! *LOL* Asks her weight, which i give and i get a 'yep huge' *LOL*
She took her needle like a champion, licked me to death and gave the vet a couple of quick slobbers too (as in sorry i didnt like ya first off) Hauled her bum off the table (let me say if the vets right, i'm gonna need a forklift soon *LOL*)
Back in the car and home we come.....10 days to go!! And we will be out in force!!

I'm so glad your photo skills are as high as your aquarium building and critter nurturing abilities. You have some of the most beautiful tanks set up there and your pics, especially the micro pics, are professional quality all the way. I'd love to hear what Coaster (our professional professional) thinks of them.
:thanks: for the regular updates

I've set up another smaller tank :) And i was lucky enough to get some Endler guppies from a fellow fishkeeper who lives in my area!!!! OMG what pretty little fish!
Pics to come....tank is still quite cloudy.
Also got another beautiful angel from the same guy, poor thing is a bit ragged looking as it was being major bullied by a silver angel he had. He should come good in no time though, and hopefully gets as gorgeous as his Dad is! Pics to come once he settles and looks a bit better *L*
I snapped some pics of the visitor that was sitting in my driveway the other day. Its a bearded dragon and would have been around 2ft long. Just awesome, let me get real close to snapping pics until the camera strap moved and scared it up the tree *L*
