NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's Supreme Court suspendedon Friday legal proceedings against Richard Gere, whofaced obscenity charges for publicly kissing Bollywoodstar Shilpa Shetty last year. Gere made headlines when he arched over and kissedShilpa Shetty, winner of the British realitytelevision show "Celebrity Big Brother," several timeson the cheek at an anti-AIDS show in New Delhi. Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan and Justice R.V. Raveendran stayed the arrest warrants against Gereand granted permission for him to travel to and fromIndia. The court criticized the complainant for his "moralpolicing" and observed, "such complaints are publicityhunting. You are bringing a bad name to this country." Similar legal proceedings against Shetty weresuspended last year. A devout Buddhist, Gere is involved with charitiesdealing with AIDS and orphans in India and oftenvisits the country. The court criticized the complainant for his "moralpolicing" and observed, "such complaints are publicityhunting. You are bringing a bad name to this country." I like to hear such jurisprudence coming from the bench in this country...
