Bobby Fischer, the greatest American chess player since Paul Morphy, has died in Iceland.

When he beat the Soviet Union's Boris Spassky to become the World Champion in 1972, he beat the USSR at their own game.

He was also a SERIOUS weirdo in this latter years and alienated many people here in the U.S. by broadcasting anti-Semitic diatribes and expressing support for the September 11th attacks in New York.

R.I.P. to a truely great chess player.

Checkmate, Mr Fischer.

A formidable intellect who sadly lost his way.

That of course, was inevitable. I often wondered why he whacked out later in his life.

I just watched a very interesting story on ESPN about Fischer. The man definitely......... well I guess jseal, OF and Gekko said it about right when they characterised him as "weirdo, lost his way and whacked out." He seemed to have a very unconventional way of looking at things to say the least.

RIP Mr. Fischer.
