Noah,
I show my ignorance; what is the issue with a mostly male litter?
Males tend to fight, and due to this are generally kept solo. Some will live together peacefully, but they are usually litter mates or very young males that have been introduced, but unfortunately there is no guarentee. Males also have a stronger scent, they mark their territory often and lots *L* (wether that territory be you or the cage). Males kept in groups tend to try to 'outstink' each other...and it can be VERY strong *LOL*. Due to the stronger smell/territorial thing, males are harder to home. Shame really as most of the smoochiest mice i have are boys.
Some females have these issues as well, but it is usually a rare thing in females

There is a movie being made now from the kid's book The Tale of Desperaux by Kate DeCamillo. If you happen to breed a cute brown one with very big ears who seems smarter than all the others, name him Desperaux :D
*LOL* ok....it appears i'll have another litter very soon...and mum is a broken aguoti and dad is a broken chocolate, so brown should be on the cards *L*

I am on the hunt for a cute brown mouse. I am going to get one for my class. Any tips I should know?
Get a boy if you only want one. Boys tend to be more sluggish *L*...the tend to rely more on human interaction as the have no mousey friend :)
Girls tend to always be on the go, and girls should be kept as 2 or more.
Get one that has been handled, if the assistant wont touch them dont get it, prolly means they are untamed biters, and believe me mice might be small but damn can the little shits bite!
Ask if you can handle the mouse proir to buying it, ensure it tolerates you holding it and patting (gently hold the tail as you do it though) if it jumps around like a looney, dont buy it.
Word of warning when handling unfamiliar mice, keep your palm skin very taut, taut skin is harder for them to get a hold of (and some mice can be like pitbulls, they hang on!).
If you can find, from a pet store, a friendly mouse, you will have one of the bestest buddies
soooo
1. Make sure its able to be handled (especially if you want it to be able to handled by kids)
2. Check no noises while its breathing (indicates URI's, which equal expensive to treat)
3. Ensure it is not hunched, got tumor growth anywhere, or gunky eyes
4. You want an alert mouse, but not one that practically climbs the walls when you go near it.
5. Get a good quality food (not made up of mainly sunflower seeds or corn)
6. Do not buy cedar for the cage/tank substrate.
7. You will need as a minimum, a house, a wheel, a drink bottle, food container and a toy of some type (empty toilet rolls etc are a hit *L*)

I have a small set up from a mini hampster we had and it has all the stuff with it. I am not sure I want us to handle it. Maybe I should get two then. What do you think?
2 girls would be better if you do not want to handle them..then they will have each other for company :)

How do you know they are preggers?
When placed with a male the female squeaks like mad everytime he comes near her *L*. As soon as you no longer hear that or notice them sleeping comfortable with each other, ya know the deed has been done. Rarely if they get to the comfy stage has the mating not been successful, as the male will generally keep trying *L*
As for the actual 'knowing' the mating was successful. The female shows very little signs until around the last week (though some do start to get pudgy earlier, if they are pregnant you will know for sure in the last week, they just keep getting bigger until they pop (literally *L*)

I just bought new tank *L*, well i put a deposit on it any way...so it wont arrive for a few weeks yet.
Its a brand new 5ft (313litres). I got it to upgrade my 4ft tank (200litres).
So all this below.......(latest pic of 4ft)
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i124/Alasse_au/Fish/4ft22ndDec07c.jpg
Will be removed and held while the changeover occurs, looking way forward to the bigger tank, but not the changeover *LOL*
While i'm awaiting the new tanks arrival, i have to get a new heater & i'm hoping to be able to pick up some new rocks for it, spotted some petrified wood at a shop the other day...looked real neat. Also on the lookout for some unusual driftwood i like.
The substrate will vary a bit too in the new one...still sand but i want to mix gravel or something in with it..
Pics to come
The 4ft will then be for sale (i'd love to keep it, but i really have nowhere to put it *L*)

You can put it in the dingy and tow it behind the ark?

Some updates.....
The new tank arrived in town this morning, but it will be a couple more weeks before i pick it up. Bilbo found me a nice piece of wood to use in the new tank, it needs soaking, but i'm having trouble finding something big enough to submerge it in (its 1.2 metres long)

Maybe you could try soaking it in a 5' aquarium?
*LOL* i need to soak it prior to it going into the 5ft tank....it will float and release shitloads of tannins....i'd like both these problems addressed before it goes in!

You can build a temporary trough with bricks and a piece of plastic. I don't know where you'll get any water to fill it with down there.
*LOL*...the liner plastic is quite expnsive...i wanna do it as cheap as possible lol

If you buy plastic liner used for construction it's probably cheaper. I built a pond with construction plastic that I just tripple layered. I used the rest of the plastic for a slip n slide :D
Yeah, PF and I were discussing this *L* A plastic tarp maybe the way to go....i can get them real cheap at the dollar shops. Also, i've been offered a kiddie half clam shell pool, so i may grab that also, it may come in handy to propagate some low plants in

Am I the only one who gets creeped out seeing that many mice? It makes me want to grab my pellet gun and Dcon. My wife and I recently had a mouse infestation in a corner of our laundry room. By the time I realized it they had made such a mess of the place. I take responsibility for not noticing sooner but we are clean people and have never had mice before. They ruined insulation, clothes, a suitcase, etc, etc.
As far as Scooby goes that is one handsome dog! Also, the pictures you take are incredible. We have a good digital camera but my pictures never turn out that clean and crisp. What are your secrets for getting such incredible pictures?
I don't like wild mice either. Wild mice do not only pick on dirty people, if there is food, shelter and a water supply, they will make it home.
But please remember the mice shown in this thread are my beloved pets, and you're are talking about shooting them with a pellet gun. That is somewhat offensive.
Scooby is a ham *LOL*...he loves the camera!
No secret really, a good camera and a good photo editing program :D

24th March 08
I was laying on my bed watching TV, with my old girl, Gizmo snuggling in for a smooch.
We'd been there for a while, when all of a sudden she started twitching, she got up and her back legs wouldn't work, sorta like a fit of some kind. She finally stopped layed down, and went back to purring and enjoying the pats. But i had a feeling she wasn't right. She was getting more and more sluggish, then she started stress panting. She kept trying half-heartedly to get up, she'd then lay back down, and keep purring. She got up and went to run off the bed, but her legs just would not work, i tried to catch her, but she went head over heels off the bed and crashed onto the floor. By this stage she was very stressed and scared and so was i. I made a scramble to pick her up and she kept trying to run, but she would just cartwheel, nothing was co-operating with her.
I could not leave her in that state til the morning, so i made an emergency call to my vet, who said he'd meet me at the surgery.
Unfortunately Gizmo had a stroke, she was getting worse as time went on, so a decision was made to send her over the rainbow bridge.
I miss her terribly, she would have been 14 this year, and she was my darling girl.
So i'm now sitting here bawling my eyes out & my girl is buried with her son. I will be forever thankful for the fact that we got quality time prior and that she was not outside alone during this. I was with her to the end
RIP Gizmo my sweet!!
