Sian Lloyd said skiing, swimming and walking helped keep her posterior pert.

It's a coveted title, previously achieved by such prestigious posteriors as those belonging to Charlotte Church, Denise van Outen and Ulrika Jonsson.

Now weather forecaster Sian Lloyd's beautiful behind has been deemed worthy of the Rear of the Year Award.

Neath-born Ms Lloyd, 49, beat off her younger competitors in an online poll to become the award's oldest winner.

Ms Lloyd said she was "honoured" and added: "Fifty is the new 30, I suppose."

A keen skier, swimmer and walker, Ms Lloyd also keeps herself trim by regularly taking part in charity treks.

Claiming she gave little thought to her figure, Ms Lloyd did admit she likes to be well-presented.

"I eat like a pig and I can't stand the gym but I do look after myself - I'd be groomed even if I worked in a supermarket," she said.

She added: "I'm even more honoured now I hear that I'm the oldest woman ever to win this. Fifty is the new 30, I suppose."

Looking at her, and previous winners, could you honestly say she doesn't look every bit as good as all the others - perhaps better?
Tony Edwards, poll organiser

The online poll was held to support the charity Beating Bowel Cancer.

Organiser Tony Edwards said he believed many voters had compared Ms Lloyd to the Cheeky Girls duo who are known for their love of hot-pants.

"Looking at her, and previous winners, could you honestly say she doesn't look every bit as good as all the others - perhaps better?" he said.

"It seems to be the age of the mature woman and Rear of the Year is delighted to acknowledge the current tastes of the British male.

"On a personal note, I think she looks fantastic."

This year's male title went to the winner of the BBC's Any Dream Will Do talent search Lee Mead.

'Break down taboos'

He said: "It's such an important cause and although I feel a bit overwhelmed, it's great to raise awareness.

"I keep my bum in shape by plenty of gym visits - and, of course, doing eight performances of Joseph a week."

Tara MacDowel, of Beating Bowel Cancer, said "We, as a nation, still find it difficult and embarrassing to talk openly about bottoms - even more so to discuss a condition such as bowel cancer.

"But it is crucial to break down the taboos associated with the disease, which is why the collaboration with Rear of the Year is such a fantastic opportunity."

The honour comes a day after Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell defended Ms Lloyd's former fiance Lembit Opik MP's latest magazine appearance.

A feature on Mr Opik, the party's Welsh leader, and Cheeky Girl twin Gabriela Irimia appears in Hello! magazine, discussing the couple's happiness and her cosmetic surgery.

Sir Menzies denied it had embarrassed the party.

She does indeed have a very nice rear........ I see her on the TV weather quite often, as it happens!

I did hear a rumour she likes "it" there, too - but I must repeat it's only a rumour.

Dammit.
