View Full Version : Define "slut/slutty"

Historically, a slut has always been a person (usually female) who is deemed sexually promiscuous. As time has gone by, like most other terms, this one has extended not only to include men but also behaviors that don't solely center around the number of sexual partners and instead refer to the lack of discrimination one uses in choosing the acts they are willing to perform.
Please ignore, for the sake of discussion, whether or not the term slut is offensive and elaborate on your personal opinion on what a slut (or slutty behavior) is to you. The tone of this discussion should not be derogatory, but respectful and informative.
As for my opinion, though it doesn't really make sense, I don't think married people are acting slutty by wanting to do unusual and kinky things with each other. If Mrs. WI wanted to climb down under the table at a nice restaurant and give me oral...that's not slutty. Or if she wanted to dress provocatively with the intent of turning me on, that's not slutty. That's adventuresome! But if she was masturbating me at the movies and had her legs open so someone else could watch her rub her pussy...well, that's kinda slutty. lol
Thoughts please?

For me the term "slut" has always meant that a person is pretty easy and gets around. More the number of partners than the actual things that they do with them.
"Slutty" is a bit tougher to describe. In the examples you listed WI, I can see where some would consider a provocatively dressed woman to look "slutty" even if she was doing so only for her and her spouse/S.O. But in that situation, who cares? That's their business.
Not sure I can describe what constitutes being "slutty" for a guy. Probably having the attitude that he could have any woman he pleases and thus treats the ones he doesn't deem worthy of him like crap. Guess I shouldn't say that's only a male trait as I know women who do that as well.
But yeah, I guess I say as far as being a "slut" goes for me it's about the number of people they are with (or try to be with) or lead on and how "easy" someone is.

WI, I read your thoughts, you found a way to describe what I am thinking.

Had posted this in another thread but it really probably belongs in this one.
Yeah. That one. Do you hate me because I want to be one of those guys...if only for a bit? ;)
Seriously...there's a long way between a series of one night stands and serial monogamy. I just think it would be fun to explore the continuum.
It can be a long way between the two but many times it's pretty much the same thing...... at least with the serial monogamists I've known. One of my friends was a "serial monogamist" for years and would just rationalize that, "Hey, I'm not just sleeping with every woman I meet." That was true, he didn't sleep with every woman he met, he'd just sleep with one for a bit while having an eye out open for the next one to come along and then he'd sleep with her........... for a bit.
No respect at all for how he treated women. Luckily, he finally grew up and stopped doing that. He was what I considered to be a male slut.

I wonder if it's less about the physical "activity" and frequency of partner change, and more about self respect?
I think a slut is someone who doesn't respect themselves enough to obey their personal boundaries. Who does things that *they* are ashamed of.
Maybe not a completely formed idea...and I am sure I could do a better job of expressing it...but I thought I'd throw that definitoin out there for debate. :)

"Slut" to me referres not so much to the number of sexual partners a woman has but more so the non-committal, uncaring way they are used by a woman just for sex. I've never thought of it to describe a man but I guess it could, just sounds like a feminine word, not sure why. So then I don't think a married couple acting out sexual fantasys are being sluts.
"Slutty", to me, has nothing to do with clothes (if so a look at current styles would sure put that label on a bunch of girls!!) or outward appearance but attitude. Remember the old saying 'actions speak louder then words'.... and in this case louder then looks. Does that make sense?
I have to kind of agree with osuche: "I think a slut is someone who doesn't respect themselves enough to obey their personal boundaries. Who does things that *they* are ashamed of." Self respect, attitude, lifestyle apply to both slut and slutty. So unless one knows a person well and how they live how can they call some one either. I personnally don't think you can and don't like either word.
I wonder to if the meanings have evolved and might be different from generation to generation? The only dictionary I have near my desk is a Webster's from 1970. It defines slut as: 1. a careless, dirty, slovenly woman; slattern 2. a sexually immoral woman 3. a female dog; bitch
(Slattern: 1. a woman who is careless and sloppy in her habits, appearance, work, etc 2. a sexually promiscuous woman; slut)
Slutty is not defined.
Will have to look in a more current dictionary and see what is given.
Not sure if any of that addresses the thread, kinda rambled on. :)

That's exactly what I'm looking for. A personal opinion broken down and analyzed. Thank you.

I suspect that the sluttiness comes from not bothering to set or accept personal sexual boundaries.
Not to be confused with the word BITCH.
A SLUT fucks for everybody, a BITCH fucks for everybody except me.

If this is true, then according to the Transitive Property of Equality...
manwhore = wookie? :confused:
I do agree with what Osuche and Teddy Bear said in their post. However, there's that other side of being a "slut" that is not about a lack of respect or being ashamed of ones actions. Lilith and the manwhore come to mind. ;)
My Joe calls me a slut. It fits into our D/s lifestyle and is really a term of endearment. It means that I totally and completely embrace my sexuality, and am unashamed to let my enthusiasm show forth. With him I'm joyfully wanton.
Which is what I think WI was talking about with his post on what married couples do with each other. I don't know if I can really be a slut within the confines of my relationship. But, it sure turns me on when he calls me one! :brows:
