I've never seen American Idol but have heard that Simon guy is rather a jackass most of the time. Is he a softer, kinder version there on the British show or were these just two extraordinary examples where he was nearly civil in his behavior?

Simon Cowell isn't a jackass. He's honest. I have to say that I rarely disagree with him, and when he does say something really cutting, it's usually after someone has not got the message when he told them nicely the first time around.

Admittedly he's pretty blunt, but that's pretty much what us Brits are like.

Yup, he won, but I wish Connie had. I don't know enough about opera to know if the other guy really IS good, or whether it's just pap. I suspect the people who really know opera and know about good technique won't rate him.
