The South Pacific, an area extending from the Equator to the Antarctic and from the east coast of Australia to the west coast of South America, will be protected from “bottom trawling” (http://www.savethehighseas.org/), which occurs when fishing boats drag huge nets across the sea floor.
While very efficient, it is very damaging to the sea bottom, and some critics have compared this type of fishing to fishing with bulldozers.
The agreement will come into force on 30 September.

Hugely devastating to the ecosystem. It should have been stopped a long time ago.

We seem to be pretty good at destroying ecosystems, unfortunately. Hopefully this isn't too late.

Are we in the path of another interstellar bypass?
Oh, yeah, I'm glad they're stopping the net fishing, too!
I'm always amazed at the huge mountains (50-70' tall) of garbage being built in landfills while right next door, enormous holes are dug to get the dirt to cover them. Then, there are the pipes jutting out of the ground to vent the methane gas from the decaying rubbish. One of these days, you'll go to plant flowers around your new house and find a banana peel and dirty diaper buried there. :(
