Kurt Vonnegut, one of the major modern American writers, died yesterday in New York. He was 84 years old.
Some of his earlier works (Player Piano, Cat's Cradle) had him labeled as a Science Fiction writer.
His “Slaughterhouse Five”, which was published during the Vietnam War, used the Allied bombing of Dresden during WWII to exemplify human cruelty and destructiveness in all wars.
Helluva writer.

:(:(:(:(:(:(:(
Sad, sad news indeed.
My high school English teacher would go on for entire class periods about how he had met him at the writer's workshop at the Univ. of Iowa.
He was easily one of the greatest in my lifetime.
R.I.P. Mr. Vonnegut.

Despite the opinions of many critics who propound "good" literature, he wrote some truly insightful works. I'll miss that kind of writing.
I won't miss his kowtowing to the tobacco industry, though.
Alas, poor Kurt. I read him not.
Mayhaps it's time to give his work a look see.
Rest in peace Mr. Vonnegut.

I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all the kinds of things you can't see from the center.

One of my favorite authors. Now I'm going to have to dig out some of his books. Slaughterhouse Five, Mother Night, and Breakfast of Champions are among my favorites. I should probably reread Cat's Cradle again.

You know, hearing of his passing just really bums me out. He was really the first author that I could say, "Yeah, I read them." I'm not a Vonnegut expert by any stretch of the imagination but I have read many of his works. Oh well, I guess I can still grab one of his books from my shelves whenever I want.
